Xbox Game Pass Price Increase

The Game Pass world has continued to shake. Last year, we saw a price increase. Then this year, we saw a major lay-off of staff members in January, then Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin studios shutdown in recent months. All these seem to go almost unnoticed with great news of COD finally coming to Game Pass and the monthly free games that almost never disappoint.

However, the major changes that were revealed a few hours ago were so major that it probably rocked all members and those thinking about subscribing.

First thing’s first, let’s talk about the pricing.

Starting today July 10, the new prices are effective for all new members. As for the current subscribers, the price change will take effect on September 12, 2024. If you haven’t received anything yet, Xbox is currently sending out notice to all members informing of the increase.

Here is the old and new prices for Game Pass subscriptions:

  • Xbox Game Pass Ultimate – $19.99/month (up from $16.99/month previously)
  • PC Game Pass – $11.99/month (previously $9.99/month)
  • Xbox Game Pass Core – $74.99/year from $59.99/year; monthly subscription will remain at $9.99/month.

As can be noticed, Game Pass for Console is no longer listed. The fate of the said tier has come to a close for some, unfortunately.

Xbox Game Pass Console Discontinued

While the price increase was somewhat predicted, almost no one expected the biggest change to the Game Pass world. Xbox Game Pass for Console will no longer be available for purchase to new members. The option will no longer be clickable in store until the new tier goes live. As for the existing members, you will still have your previously purchased stacked months and can stack another 13 months on top of that if you want.

Together with the news of the discontinuance of GP Console for new members, Microsoft introduced the newest tier that will be available in the coming months. Xbox Game Pass Standard will replace Console but will no longer include day-one titles. To appease gamers, it will include online console multiplayer access which the Console tier was missing before. So if you were buying a separate Xbox Game Pass Core, you will no longer need that for the Standard tier.

Apart from that, Xbox support also stated that “Console may have select titles that are not included with Xbox Game Pass Standard.” The launch date of the Standard tier is not yet announced but rumors are that it will go live at the same time as the price increase on September 12. What is certain though is that it will make its debut at $14.99 USD price tag.
