Xbox Game Pass on PS5 availability

Now the ongoing PlayStation vs Xbox anti-trust case in regards to Microsoft’s recent $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard is over, rumors are swirling that Microsoft is set to release Xbox Game Pass on the PS Store and PlayStation 5. But just how accurate are the rumors?

In the recent Xbox Business Update, Microsoft announced that the Xbox Game Pass had reached the incredible milestone of 34 million subscribers. This has led to many thinking Microsoft will eventually expand to PlayStation, something which was hinted at when Xbox CFO Tim Stuart revealed at the Wells Fargo TMT Summit in November last year that Microsoft plans to make every first-party game and subscription services available on “every screen that can play games,” which would include PlayStation and Switch.

Stuart’s comments followed Xbox boss Phil Spencer, who in 2018, said that Microsoft wants to bring Xbox Game Pass to every device while speaking at a Barclays conference.

Well, unfortunately for PlayStation and Nintendo Switch players, during the recent Xbox Business Update, Head of Xbox Studios Matt Booty confirmed that “Game Pass will only be available on Xbox.” That may seem to put the rumors to bed, but it may not be all that simple.

During the same event, Phil Spencer announced four Xbox first-party games will be released on multiple platforms, suggesting a PS5 and Switch release for each. Spencer declined to confirm which games would be going multi-platform but did say Starfield and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would not be among them.

The announcement of more Xbox games going multi-platform is a move by Microsoft which it sees it must make to “ensure long-term success for both Xbox and the industry as a whole.”

One exciting move that has been confirmed is that Diablo IV will launch on Xbox Game Pass on March 28, which Microsoft and Xbox see as the beginning of Activision Blizzard games coming to the subscription service.

Conclusion: Microsoft and Sony partnership

A Sony and Microsoft partnership may be just too far away at the moment, and we may not be getting the Xbox Game Pass on PlayStation, but gamers can be excited that more Xbox first-party games are launching on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. Hopefully, it’s only the beginning.
