Epic Games client required for Space Marine 2 on Steam

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is out for those who pre-purchased the Gold and Ultra Edition. Although the action game’s yet to release for everybody else, Steam players have been leaving negative reviews because they’re forced to install the Epic Games Online Services client after accepting the EULA.

The review bombing from players saw Space Marine 2 drop to just 55% positive on Steam in its first few hours. It has since risen back up and sits at “Mostly Positive,” but players are still unhappy.

Space Marine 2 Steam users need Epic Games client explained

Due to the immediate backlash after its early access launch, publisher Focus Entertainment clarified things in a forum post. Speaking to players, Focus said the installation of the Epic Online Services client was to implement support for “optional cross-play between Steam and Epic players and to synchronize friend lists between the two stores.”

The company also reassured players that it is optional and “linking your Steam and Epic accounts is not required to enjoy the game.”

Although some players have left negative reviews and others have uninstalled the Epic Online Services client once installed, most have been playing and loving it. The game recorded a peak of 134,302 players on Steam on its first day – and remember, it doesn’t officially release on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC until September 9.
