Video Game History Foundation Digital Archive

The Video Game History Foundation, established in 2017, is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and teaching the history of video games. Recognizing the cultural significance of video games, the foundation has been instrumental in safeguarding artifacts, documents, and media that chronicle the evolution of the gaming industry.

While the library is in California, the foundation has reached a significant milestone as they made their archive accessible to everyone around the world for free.

Launch of the VGHF Digital Archive

On January 30, 2025, the VGHF unveiled its digital library, an extensive online archive offering public access to over 30,000 curated files from its physical collection. This initiative marks a significant step in making video game history accessible to enthusiasts, researchers, and the general public.

The digital archive, which is still in early access, features more than 1,500 full-text searchable, out-of-print video game magazines including renowned titles like Electronic Gaming Monthly and GamePro. Beyond magazines, the collection also holds rare development documents, artwork, promotional materials, and other assets that provide insight into the industry’s past.

Users can search for specific games, authors, publishers, and other metadata across both public and previously internal materials. Notable items in the archive include guidebooks, materials from the first 12 years of E3, an international collection of FromSoftware promotional content, and over 100 CDs of art and press releases from GamePro’s magazine archive.

Frank Cifaldi, founder of the VGHF, expressed pride in the project’s progress, stating that they have been working on this since the foundation started in 2017. He emphasized the foundation’s belief that “with the right tools, anyone can be a video game historian.”

The launch of the VGHF Digital Library represents a pivotal moment in the preservation of video game history, offering a valuable resource for those interested in exploring the rich and diverse legacy of the gaming industry.
