Ubisoft back on Steam: Why this shocking U-turn for Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Ubisoft has announced its decision to release all its future games on Steam. The first Ubisoft game to release on Steam on its launch day will be Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Players can pre-order Assassin’s Creed Shadows for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC for its February 14, 2025 release date.

Ubisoft has reversed its decision to only release games from day one on the Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Connect. Instead, future Ubisoft games will launch day one on Steam. The news comes from the recent surprise Assassin’s Creed Shadows delay announcement after Ubisoft pulled out of the Tokyo Game Show 2024.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be the first Ubisoft game to get a day one release on Steam since Starlink: Battle for Atlas, which launched in April 2019. Since then, Ubisoft has first released its games on Epic and Ubisoft Connect before pushing them to Steam months, and sometimes years, later.

The move by Ubisoft may not come as a surprise to many as the company is suffering a turbulent year. Its primary concern is its share prices, which continue to plummet, recently falling another 30% this month after Ubisoft announced to its investors on September 9 that Assassin’s Creed Shadows was facing a delay of several months. Following the recent delay to Assassin’s Creed Shadows and an underperforming Star Wars Outlaws, it has been revealed that Ubisoft’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors are to launch an investigation and review of the company. It’s yet to be seen what the investigation will reveal. By releasing new games on Steam, the company will hope to see an immediate boost to revenue and performance.
