According to Insider Gaming, Ubisoft is currently developing a new battle royale game codenamed “Scout,” which is “heavily inspired” by Apex Legends.
Ubisoft’s latest attempt at the battle royale genre has reportedly been in development for “a couple of years” and once used Apex Legends as the thumbnail for the project.
What We Know About Ubisoft’s Battle Royale
Citing a source, Insider Gaming claims the battle royale will feature “very similar” characters to Respawn’s Apex Legends, with a “spin” on characters such as Lifeline, Pathfinder, and Wraith.
Ubisoft itself has not officially announced a new battle royale but will hope this new one, dubbed “Scout,” will take cues from Apex’s more tactical and hero-driven gameplay and do better than the failed Hyper Scape, which struggled to find a lasting audience.
How Will It Compete in a Crowded Market?
The battle royale genre has been a competitive market since the height of PUBG and Fortnite, and Ubisoft’s recent Hyper Scape failed to break into it as players found better games such as Warzone and Apex Legends.
This time around, though, Ubisoft believes it could find a place by grabbing players from Apex, which EA CEO Andrew Wilson admitted in a recent earnings call needs “a meaningful update” to address dwindling player numbers.
Ubisoft will hope its experience with tactical shooters and team-based games may give this title an edge, blending depth with battle royale chaos.
When Could We See a Reveal or Playtest?
Ubisoft is currently undergoing reorganization after experiencing several setbacks and a decline in stock prices, so there is no clear timeline for a reveal.
