Windows 10 is Microsoft’s longest-running operating system and is still a favorite for many. For an operating system that’s been around for 9 years, not many people know the story behind the Windows 10 background. It’s a background created live and not generated by Computer Graphics.

Released with the official version 1507 on 29 July 2015, Windows 10 is now 9 years old. An operating system that, although not loved at first, has reached appreciation levels rivaling the beloved Windows 7 over time. Many have seen the system’s default background numerous times—a window illuminated in a dark light blue room. But not many know that it wasn’t realized in CGI.

For the occasion, Microsoft’s team collaborated with design director Bradley G. Munkowitz, also known as GMUNK. It was created in a San Francisco photo studio, using light and laser effects, but above all, a lot of creativity from Bradley. Behind the artistic design of numerous films like Tron Legacy and Oblivion, as well as advertisements for various car brands.


Windows 10: 9 years of support ending in 2025

Windows 10 has already turned 9 years old since its launch in 2015, becoming Microsoft’s longest-running consumer operating system, second only to Windows 7, which ended support in 2020. Its launch also brought many hilarious moments, including the upgrade notification interrupting live TV broadcasts and streams, and becaming a meme.

Despite the launch of Windows 11 on 5 October 2021, Windows 10 is still the preferred OS for gamers, with 48.66% according to Steam’s September 2024 Hardware Survey—just under 1% more than Windows 11. Support for consumer editions of Windows 10 will end on 14 October 2025, though it’s possible to upgrade to Windows 11 for free.
