A recent news update suggests that PlayStation is working on a new project. It seems like Sony might be making a comeback in the handheld console market with a handheld PS5.

The news comes from a 25 November 2024 article by Bloomberg. Reporting that Sony Group Corp. is in the early stages of developing a new handheld console capable of running PS5 games natively.
A rather exciting news that reflects PlayStation‘s ambition to challenge Nintendo in the handheld market. Especially amidst rumors of a similar move by Microsoft. With its initial PS Portal experiment, the time might be right for PlayStation to capitalize on advancing technology and renewed interest.

According to Bloomberg, Sony’s project is still in its early stages. It could take years before we see something tangible. That said, let’s explore what we can expect from this Portable PS5.
Starting with internal specs and compatibility with PS5 games, it’s likely that PlayStation will rely on AMD. Reflecting further, it’s plausible that PlayStation might have adopted the proposal AMD initially pitched to Nintendo for Switch 2. This would involve more powerful hardware than what Nvidia offers with Tegra (ARM), although x86 would demand higher power consumption compared to ARM.
The hardware could deliver performance close to an Xbox Series S, especially if PlayStation is able to introduce tech capable of leveraging its own PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution). By the hypothetical launch of this Handheld, PSSR might be matured enough to be available in a larger library of titles, offering portable gaming in native 1080p or high-quality upscaled resolution for the most demanding games.
Sony is no stranger to the handheld console market, with its experience from the PSP and PSVita. Both were well-loved but faced criticism for controversial decisions by PlayStation, leading to financial failure. Chiefly: Proprietary Memory and a Limited First-Party Game Library.
These criticisms might already be addressed with a “miniature PS5”, sharing the entire PlayStation catalog from day one. And with Astro as PS’s real mascot, it’s possible to rival Nintendo’s Mario. But for now, it’s just rumors. We’ll have to wait for something more concrete.
