Silent Hill game series evolution

Konami revealed the newest Silent Hill game during Sony’s PlayStation State of Play, Silent Hill: The Message, which will be the first of a “new wave” of Silent Hill games.

In a post on the official PlayStation blog, producer Motoi Okamoto explained that Silent Hill: The Short Message began as an “experimental project” as the team looked to try out different things to polish their horror game expertise ahead of the many Silent Hill games they have planned.

That desire to experiment led the development team to explore a more modern Silent Hill and how online and mobile phone communication can play a role in a psychological narrative. With that goal, Okamoto believes they have produced a game that portrays a modern story of how social media, social pressures, and bullying can force today’s youth into isolation and a sense of self-hate, which they can struggle to break free from.

And the good news is that you can now try Silent Hill: The Message for FREE on PlayStation 5. It is a PS5 exclusive, but if you’re lucky enough to have the console, you can give it a try and “enjoy Konami’s vision of an all-new, contemporary Silent Hill.”

The New Silent Hill 2 Trailer Is All About Combat

Konami also treated us to a new trailer for the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake, which focused on combat. Back in October 2022, Konami and Bloober Team revealed the Silent Hill 2 remake, where we got to see the iconic fog and feel the ever-present sense of dread the series is known for. But this latest trailer at the State of Play shows how it’s been changed up for a more modern experience.

Although the team played the original and praised its impressive world-building and plot, they believed the game’s combat needed an overhaul. And to that end, they’ve gone with an over-the-shoulder style very similar to the Resident Evil 4 Remake.

That third-person over-the-shoulder camera isn’t for everyone, but I think it works really well in enhancing the claustrophobia and dread that horror games can create. And I say that as someone who hated the original Resident Evil 4 but has played the remake so much that it wasn’t only my Game of the Year in 2023, but I’m only 27 minutes away from the speedrun world record on Hardcore Mode.

For those worrying, as mentioned, Bloober Team loved the original story and have left it untouched. Now, as for a release date, we do not have one. It seems we could be waiting until 2025 or even longer for it to release on PS5. You’ll just have to keep checking back for more Silent Hill news.
