PS5 Pro Power Usage: How Much Energy Does Sony’s Next-Gen Console Need?

With only a few days until the official release of the PS5 Pro, new information has surfaced regarding the specifications and power consumption of Sony’s latest console.

As the launch approaches, many are eager to learn more about the PS5 Pro. The eagerly awaited PS5 Pro version will feature a CPU based on AMD’s 8-core Zen 2 with SMT and a new graphics upgrade using an unspecified version of RDNA 3 or 4, offering features from AMD’s next-gen tech.

Many Playstation fans view the PS5 Pro as an opportunity for an upgrade from the Base version, aiming to enjoy the premium Playstation catalog experience. However, the PS4 Pro experience still lingers in some minds—powerful but also noisier with higher energy consumption.

PS5 Pro: New Specifications Confirmed by Leaks

The official launch of the PS5 Pro is imminent. Some users have already received their units, triggering early leaks before the launch. Among them is videotechuk_, who shared a leaked instruction manual in Portuguese.

The leaked specifications have proven accurate, with the addition of 2 GB of DDR5 alongside 16 GB of GDDR6 RAM, likely dedicated to system operations to keep GDDR6 memory “free” for gaming. The maximum power consumption is also noted as 390 watts.

PS5 Pro: What Is the Energy Consumption of the Pro Version?

While system-dedicated memory is the major addition, the power consumption is also notable. The PS5 Pro reaches a maximum 390 watts, which is 40 watts higher than the launch version of the Base PS5 (CFI-1216A) and 50 watts higher than the Slim version. Keep in mind that this is the maximum threshold.

In everyday use, PS5 Pro should not show a significant increase in energy consumption. Regular use, such as streaming or playback, should not result in substantial energy rises. However, gaming may cause variable consumption, depending on the title. The approximately 45% increase in graphical capability translates to a better visual experience, which is justified.

PS5 Pro: Benefits of Increased Power Compared to Base PS5

PS5 Pro is certainly one of the most anticipated releases ever. While the Pro comes at a significantly higher cost than the base version, some RDNA 4 features are not available on the market, with PSSR (Playstation Spectral Super Resolution) being the most interesting.

PSSR is Playstation’s answer to Intel’s XeSS and Nvidia’s DLSS, an AI-based upscaling algorithm. This allows PS5 Pro to deliver superior visuals without performance loss, making it currently the most powerful console on the market and the ideal choice for playing the highly anticipated GTA 6.
