Everspace is a series of space video games that have evolved significantly over time. So far, there are two games in the series. The first game, Everspace, was released on May 25, 2017, for PC and Xbox One. The second part of this space saga, Everspace 2, was released for PC on April 6, 2023. The game initially came out in Early Access in January 2021 and was fully released in 2023. On August 15, 2023, the game was also released for Xbox and PlayStation.

What is Everspace?

Everspace is a space flight simulator by Rockfish Games that incorporates some roguelike elements. You take control of your own spaceship and must fight your way through increasingly difficult sectors. The game is relatively fast-paced. You fight enemies in the sectors, collect resources, and upgrade your ship. There are no fixed levels; instead, the sectors are procedurally generated.

Everspace 1 Gameplay

If you die in the game, death is permanent, but it’s an integral part of the game. You carry over resources through your death that allow you to permanently upgrade your ship, making each future run a bit easier, helping you progress further.

Although the story is not the main focus of this game, it does exist. It’s revealed to you through dialogues. You are a pilot on a personal mission in space. As you progress in the game, you’ll learn more about the story’s background through these dialogues.

In addition to the main game, there’s also a DLC called Everspace: Encounters, offering new missions, ships, and much more.

What is Everspace 2?

Everspace 2 is the sequel to the popular Everspace from 2021 and 2023. This game has changed significantly compared to its predecessor. Many aspects, from the visuals to the gameplay, are different. However, the game still builds on the foundations of its predecessor. You still pilot your spaceship, which you can upgrade. But it’s no longer a roguelike. Everspace 2 has become an open-world game with RPG elements.

You can explore the world, where you’ll receive many different and exciting missions. And just like in the previous game, you can improve your ship. In Everspace 2, there are many star systems you can freely explore. You’ll find various planets, space stations, and, of course, enemies.

Now, there’s also a deep story that was missing in the predecessor but wasn’t needed there. You play as a clone of the protagonist from the first game, Adam Roslin. After surviving the war, you search for a new life at the far end of the galaxy. The story is relatively linear but offers personal conflicts and large-scale space dramas.

How Everspace has changed

Everspace 2 is quite different from its predecessor in terms of gameplay, which may have surprised many, but it hasn’t made the game worse. The first game was a roguelike where death meant the end of the run and was an important aspect. In the second game, when you die, you simply reload the last save and continue. This allows for a much deeper gaming experience and lets you immerse yourself more in the game. And the core feature of flying, which has always played an important role, can shine even more in an open world when you have a fixed goal to achieve.

Everspace 2 Gameplay

The focus on exploration and new RPG elements fits perfectly into the Everspace universe. Now, you can customize your ship much more. Besides the weapons and equipment that you could only upgrade in the first game, there are now abilities that you can build into your spaceship through specific upgrades. There are also many more different ships, each with its own properties and abilities. This allows you to customize your ship to perfectly match your playstyle, whether it’s a light, fast ship or a heavily armored one.

In the world of the second game, there are tons of side missions and main missions that you can complete. This is even more enjoyable in the handcrafted environment of Everspace 2. You can also explore some planets and even fight enemies there, which wasn’t possible in the previous game.

The second game also has the advantage that characters can be shown in much more depth. Additionally, you’re an integral part of the story, which continues throughout the game. You can also witness the changes in the characters, especially the transformation of the protagonist.
