Nintendo officially files a lawsuit against Palworld. Know more about this suit and Pocketpair’s response to the claims

Unlike traditional monster-catching games however, the game introduces a survival element, forcing players to navigate a harsh wilderness while building their own settlements and farming for resources. While this adds a layer of depth and strategy to the gameplay, its similarities with Pokemon were hard to miss and now, Nintendo captured Pocketpair instead.

Nintendo Lawsuit Against Palworld Developer

Even before Palworld released, many cannot unsee and unknow how similar it is to Pokemon. The launch was controversial and it was obvious that a lawsuit was on the horizon. It probably didn’t help that the game’s launch was so successful that the damage and “potential loss of income” was too hard to pass for both Nintendo and the Pokemon company. And so now we’re here with a lawsuit filed by both companies in the Tokyo District Court against its developer, Pocketpair.

Many wondered why it took this long since the last official communication on this matter was in January when Pokemon Company said it was investigating the matter.

The issue though is, what exactly can they hold against Palworld especially that there are A LOT of creature-catching games in the market. They cannot get them for trademark or copyright infringement so what they filed against instead is for patent infringement.

On what exactly these “multiple patents” are, they were not released. But for them to be able to file a lawsuit, there has to be something.

Pocketpair Responds to Nintendo Lawsuit

Palworld is just on its early access and it has already headlined in many different ways. Peak player count, record-breaking sales, and “Pokemon with guns” review were plastered in the news on launch. And now just days after releasing Palworld 0.3.7 update, Pocketpair, will go against a possible heavy ending with the recent lawsuit.

As of writing, Pocketpair is still unaware of which patents are in question. Here is their full statement on the matter:



How this ends is still up in the air, but considering Nintendo’s chances, it’s not looking great for Palworld. Case in point, Nintendo plagiarism case against mobile game Era’s Adventure. The appearance of Era was challenged that it was a clear copy of Nintedo’s Yoshi. At the end of it, Era’s color was changed and wore a backwards cap instead, indicating that a lot of resources and time went to “re-doing” elements.

So no, Palworld will not cease to exist but there will be changes to the game and its full release is looking further away now than before.
