Overwatch Competitive Open Queue will be a constant thing in the game!

Overwatch’s Jeff Kaplan has stated in the latest developer update that Competitive Open Queue will be a permanent feature going forward.

Currently, the Competitive Open Queue, which allows you to pick your character rather than go through the 2-2-2- split of the Role Queue mode, is the second most played mode in Korea, which is the reasoning behind the change.

In a video he states, “in Korea, Competitive Open Queue in Arcade is the second most popular mode being played right now, While in North America Competitive Open Queue is less popular than Mystery Heroes, or even Workshop modes being played in the game browser.”

The new official mode will hopefully be made available in early July with Kaplan saying, “Very shortly, Competitive Open Queue will come down for a while, We are going to work very quickly, as quickly as we can, to bring back another shortened arcade version of Competitive Open Queue that will go live sometime in June, we’re thinking mid-June, but don’t hold me exactly to that date.”

Kaplan went on to add, “Then, in early July when Season 23, the normal Competitive Season starts, Competitive Open Queue will now become an official mode that will be supported alongside the Role Queue Competitive Queue”

On how it will work Kaplan explained, “You’ll go to the Play menu of Overwatch, you’ll select the Competitive card, then underneath the Competitive card will be two options: one will be Role Queue and alongside of that will be Competitive Open Queue.”

For those concerned about future tuning and balancing, he did reveal that Overwatch would still be balanced around the Role Queue mode.
