Virtual reality continues to grow, with successful games such as Half-Life: Alyx and Beat Saber proving that gamers want VR, and a January earnings call for Facebook put the company’s next generation of VR headsets front and center.
The Oculus Quest 2 launched October 13, 2020, and has proven to be a success for Facebook.
Exact numbers are not known, but according to a RecRoom developer, the number could be as high as 2-3 million new users in the last few months alone.
It’s a phenomenal achievement for a sector branded as a niche. Of course, the Oculus Quest 2 benefits from being completely wireless, which for some is a huge selling point. That, and the fact that the retail price of $299 is a bargain, helps.
Factor in the fact it pretty much has a monopoly on the market for high-end wireless VR headsets and that a lot of the world has been in lockdown for the last twelve months, and you can see why it continues to thrive.
Oh, and the Oculus Quest 2 is the most used VR headset for Steam users.
You should not think it’s just about games either. In 2019 at Oculus Connects, Zuckerberg himself stated that 10% of activity on the Oculus Store is towards educational apps. Watch his presentation at Oculus Connects here.
In Facebook’s January earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated, “We’re continuing to work on new hardware [which] will fit the same platform, so the content that works on Quest 2 should be forward-compatible…”
In an interview with The Information, Zuckerberg also said, “So, we have product teams spun up now working on the next few generations of virtual reality and what Quest 3 and 4 are going to look like.”
It’s important to note here that Facebook is all about social media and ensuring its users can interact.
That said, Zuckerberg continued by saying, “For example, one of the things that I’m really excited about for future versions [of Quest] is getting eye-tracking and face-tracking in, because if you’re really excited about social presence, you want to make sure that the device has all the sensors to really animate realistic avatars so you can communicate well like that.”
These are grand visions from Facebook, and later in the interview, Zuckerberg mentions that improvements could take place over the next ten years. So, although the headsets are coming, it could be a while before we see them.

Augmented reality, or AR, is the future for many, and Facebook agrees as they plan to launch their Smart Glasses late at some point in 2021.
Facebook has been working on AR smart glasses since 2017, and their head of Facebook Reality Labs, Andrew Bosworth, said back in February of this year, “It’s coming together pretty nicely.”
However, they are not coming without controversy as Facebook is looking into the legal and privacy issues surrounding the use of facial recognition.
In a tweet, Bosworth admitted that, although facial recognition can be hugely beneficial for software and hardware potential moving forward, it does come with its issues.
It’s an exciting time, though, as we watch AR and VR develop into something that we can use in our daily lives.
The Facebook Smart Glasses look pretty stylish too, as they have been developed alongside Ray-Ban and are lighter weight and less noticeable than AR glasses already out there.
Facebook thinks it could be as early as 2023 that we see smart glasses replace smartphones.
