Atomfall is the latest game from Rebellion, the studio behind Sniper Elite and Zombie Army. The game takes you to an alternate 1950s Britain after a nuclear incident.

The game combines exploration, story, and action into a dark and atmospheric experience. Everything you need to know about this game is right here.
Atomfall: Release Date and Platforms
Atomfall launches today on March 27, 2025 for PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 around 5:00 PM UTC. It will also be available from day one on Xbox Game Pass.
Atomfall: Story and Setting
Atomfall is set in an alternate version of the 1960s in Britain, more specifically five years after the real-life Windscale fire of 1957. The Windscale fire was the worst nuclear accident in British history. In this alternate timeline, the accident resulted from secret experiments by the UK Ministry of Defence, creating a dystopian quarantine zone in the Lake District, Northern England.
You play as a nameless protagonist with amnesia who wakes up in an underground bunker. Naturally, you want to get out and explore the world, where a devastated region awaits. Your goal is to uncover the truths behind the events. Along your journey, you’ll encounter various factions and threats including masked outlaws, fanatic cults, and mutated creatures.
Atomfall: Gameplay and Mechanics
But let’s now talk about what matters most in a game – the gameplay. Atomfall is a first-person action survival game. It features an open world. In the Lake District, you’ll find many interconnected areas that you can freely explore. These areas differ from one another, keeping the scenery fresh and interesting.
In the world, you’ll gather materials and scrap to craft weapons and gear. Ammunition is very scarce, so you’ll need to collect and conserve it. In combat, you’ll often need to combine ranged and melee attacks. You can also sneak through areas and even complete the game without killing a single enemy.

During combat, you also need to pay attention to your heart rate and stamina. For example, if you sprint too much, you might struggle to aim or won’t be able to perform a strong attack. You can talk to many characters and resolve some fights peacefully. The game offers varied dialogue options that impact the outcome of quests, relationships with characters, and even the game’s ending.
The developers drew inspiration from other games like Fallout: New Vegas, Metro, and BioShock. So we can expect a rich, atmospheric game world.
Editions and Game Pass
The game comes in two editions: the Standard Edition and the Deluxe Edition. If you pre-order before 5 PM, you’ll receive the pre-order bonus. This includes the “Essential Supplies Pack,” which features an exclusive melee weapon variant, more loot, and item recipes. The Standard Edition costs €49.99.

The Deluxe Edition costs €69.99 and includes the “Advanced Supplies Pack,” which contains an exclusive pistol variant, a metal detector skin, and a skill manual. You’ll also receive a story expansion, although it won’t be available on launch day. Plus, you get three days of early access, so you can start playing today before 5 PM.
The Standard Edition is also available starting 5 PM today on Xbox Game Pass. You can play the game with the Xbox Game Pass PC or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on PC or Xbox.
Conclusion
With Atomfall, Rebellion delivers an atmospheric first-person action game. The alternate version of 1960s Northern England makes for a perfect video game setting. The open world in the irradiated Lake District invites you to explore, fight, and sneak – with resource scarcity, tactical decisions, and dialogue options playing a key role. If you’re into dark settings, story-driven choices, and flexible gameplay, Atomfall is definitely worth checking out. Thanks to Xbox Game Pass, you can try the game at release for a low price.
