The system requirements for Capcom’s new Monster Hunter are worrying the fans

After the reveal of Monster Hunter Wilds during the September State of Play, Capcom announces the PC System Requirements. Requirements that have sparked strong discussions, as well as concerns about the game launching in February 2025.

With the new fourth trailer of Monster Hunter Wilds, presented at the September State of Play, Capcom also announced the System Requirements. The next chapter of the renowned and beloved Monster Hunter series has certainly sparked no shortage of debates, especially on the following System Requirements:

Minimum:

  • Processor: Intel i5-10600 or i3-12100F or AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 1660 Super or AMD RX 5600 XT (6GB VRAM)
  • RAM: 16GB RAM
  • Storage: 140 GB on SSD
  • Additional Notes: 1080p resolution (upscaled from 720p) / 30 fps on low settings

Recommended:

  • Processor: Intel i5-11600K or i5-12400 / AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Ryzen 5 5500
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super or RTX 4060 / AMD RX 6700XT
  • RAM: 16GB RAM
  • Storage: 140 GB on SSD
  • Additional Notes: 1080p (native resolution) / 60 fps on Medium settings and use of Frame Generation

Monster Hunter Wilds – The Frame Generation Issue

Monster Hunter Wilds has system requirements that at first glance seem normal for a modern game, set to release on February 28, 2025. However, it hides much more than it seems. In fact, the Additional Notes have sparked the most debate. While the minimum requirements are somewhat acceptable, the recommended specs talk about the use of Frame Generation on Medium settings to reach 60fps.

As many already know, Frame Generation is a technology based on a machine learning algorithm that creates a third interpolated frame between two. Essentially, it generates an intermediate frame, which adds latency but improves scene fluidity. The main problem is how Capcom seems to consider the recommended hardware unable to offer a 60fps Full HD experience without the use of Frame Gen.

Monster Hunter Wilds – General Opinion on System Requirements

The inclusion and necessity of using a technology like Frame Generation has raised many discussions, not only among users but also among hardware enthusiasts. It’s an issue that in 2024 has generated much debate, especially regarding how Frame Generation is marketed as a magic wand to double or even triple the framerate. Or how game resolutions are hidden behind upscaling.

Options intended to improve the experience on less capable hardware but instead used to mask poor optimization. Additionally, these Monster Hunter Wilds Requirements are in line with those of Dragon’s Dogma 2, which shares the new generation of the RE Engine and has been heavily criticized for disastrous optimization, still suffering over five months after launch.


Monster Hunter Wilds: Should We Worry About the Console Launch?

The issue with the PC requirements also seems to affect Sony and Microsoft’s home consoles. In fact, ninth-generation consoles offer AMD-based hardware similar to that of PCs. The recommended Ryzen 5 3600 and AMD Radeon RX 6700XT are in line with PS5 and Xbox Series X hardware. The RX 6700XT is at least 20% faster than the RDNA 2 solution in consoles.

The combination fails to maintain 60fps without the use of Frame Gen on Medium settings, suggesting that Upscaling will be used on Consoles, and general settings will likely be on Medium to achieve 60 FPS in Performance mode. Quality mode will probably upscale from just over 1080p to 30 FPS, not to mention the Xbox Series S. We will have to wait and see on February 28, 2025, how Monster Hunter Wilds will perform as the next chapter of Capcom’s famous series.
