Markus Alexej Persson, better known as “Notch,” is a well-known name in the gaming industry. He’s none other than the creator of Minecraft, who left Mojang after Microsoft acquired it in 2014.
Minecraft has had undeniable success and has become a global phenomenon. Even today, it remains the top-selling game of all time with over 300 million copies sold worldwide, a massive 100 million lead on the second-place GTA V.
Minecraft 2: Notch Wants to Create a Spiritual Successor to Minecraft
With the beginning of 2025, ‘Notch,’ the creator of Minecraft, has resurfaced. He’s announced that he’s working hard on a new project—a game he describes as a classic roguelike with a first-person dungeon-crawler vibe, featuring a tile-based structure.
However, Notch has asked if fans would prefer a “Minecraft 2” from him. Receiving an overwhelming response in favor of a new game in the style of Minecraft. And Notch admitting that he wouldn’t mind creating a spiritual successor to his first big hit.

I thought that maybe people ACTUALLY do want me to make another game that’s super similar to the first one, and I’m loving working on games again.
I don’t super duper care exactly which game I make first (or even if I make more), but I do know…
Minecraft 2: General Opinions on This “Fake” Announcement
Notch’s words have already sparked numerous discussions online. Some people want to see a true sequel to Notch’s beloved voxel world, while others remain unconvinced. Certainly, many factors play an important role in a potential “Minecraft 2.”
Not only is the IP now owned by Microsoft, meaning it would be a game completely separate from the original, but might feel to simple in this particular period. Furthermore, it’s not 2009 anymore, when a project like Minecraft was seen as something revolutionary. And finally there are also Notch latest comments and interactions that have cost him the respect as a public figure in the industry, especially from his old fans.
In Conclusion on the Spiritual Successor to Minecraft
It’s simply an idea that Notch has in mind. Nothing concrete yet. Moreover, many see Minecraft as the only successful project created by Notch, with a fair bit of luck. Still, many would love to see what Notch could come up with in a “Minecraft 2.”
