Marathon Not Ready? Bungie Leaves Fans in Suspense!
Bungie has left fans in suspense as the studio reveals its long-awaited FPS Marathon isn’t quite ready for the spotlight. Marathon is Bungie’s next project after Destiny 2, and it’s in development for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
A bold reimagining of Bungie’s own classic 1994 first-person shooter, Marathon has had fans excited since Bungie revealed it in 2023. In a recent video, the developer updated fans on Marathon’s progress, but Game Director Joe Ziegler stopped short of revealing much, saying it’s “a little early to show you all of it as a one piece.”
Some fans have pointed out that it’s not much of an update but a reminder that Marathon still exists as a game. Joe Ziegler has reassured fans that Marathon is “on track.” Marathon is available to Wishlist on PS5, Steam, and Xbox Series X|S.
Why Fans Are So Eager for Marathon’s Return
The original Marathon trilogy began in 1994 with Marathon and then Marathon 2: Durandel and Marathon Infinity in 1995 and 1996. The games feature real-time action, non-linear level design, and utilized free look, which set it apart from many FPS games of the time.
The success of the Marathon trilogy gained a cult following, and its influence helped shape future Bungie games like Halo and Destiny. A reimagining of Marathon is a chance for Bungie to release it for today’s platforms, something Ziegler says they are eager to do while maintaining its “mysteries, eeriness, and psychological creepiness.”
What to Expect from Marathon’s Next Reveal
Marathon is far from release, with the game only in early development. Ziegler’s reassurance that the FPS is on track will satisfy many, and he said in the recent update video that “we really, really are looking forward to showing you what that looks like, especially in play,” whenever that will be.
Fortunately, Bungie seems willing to update fans frequently, and the studio is keen to show gameplay and features when they are ready. Right now, Marathon could launch in late 2026 or 2027. With Bungie’s success in the Halo and Destiny franchises, fans are eagerly waiting to see what the developer does with the classic IP that started it all.
