Killing Floor 3 Postponed: Tripwire Explains the Delay and What’s Next

The Tripwire Interactive team returns more than a week after the Closed Beta of Killing Floor 3, officially announcing that the game has been delayed. Let’s find out why!

Check out the original Killing Floor 3 Release Date announcement

Killing Floor 3 Delayed to late 2025

Killing Floor 3 is the highly anticipated third installment in the famous zombie/infected-themed co-op shooter series from Tripwire Interactive. With a series that saw immense success with the second game, cementing it as one of the most fun co-op online shooters to play.

This third chapter, built on Unreal Engine 5, was initially planned for release on 25 March 2025. This time with a full game instead of Early Access and available simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Killing Floor 3: Official Announcement of the Delay

With the first week of March and only a few weeks before launch, the Tripwire Interactive team shares an important update. On 7 March 2025, the team officially communicated the decision to delay the release of Killing Floor 3.

The delay does not have a set date yet, but it is ideally scheduled for late 2025. The team’s decision was further supported by the backing of their parent company, Embracer. The team expressed this based on feedback received from fans during the Closed Beta held from 20 to 24 February 2025.

Killing Floor 3: The Reasons for the Delay and Feedback from the Closed Beta

As stated, the choice to delay the game became extremely clear based on the feedback shared by Beta testers. The feedback was overwhelmingly unanimous regarding decisions that were not well-received in Killing Floor 3, mostly related to the gameplay. Some of the key points include:

  • Specialists System: The decision to remove classes and perks in favor of characters with different abilities. This was not well received by the community, especially with the prospect of future paid characters with better perks.
  • Graphics and Audio: Despite improvements from UE5, many found several visual effects distracting and often obstructing gameplay. Additionally, the weapon sounds were rather bland, lacking that satisfying impact and heaviness of the shots.
  • UI: A significant downgrade and streamlining of the UI. It adopted a more generic approach, lacking the identity seen in the previous UI.

Additionally, there were performance issues and stuttering typical of UE5, as well as poorly executed animations. The choice to adopt a Battle Pass as an additional monetization feature, alongside characters and skins, was also controversial. UI, Animations, and Performance have been confirmed to be in progress, and the unlocking of perks and characters will be post-launch features.

In Conclusion

The decision to delay the game was universally well-received by the community, who were positively impacted by Tripwire’s choice. The general feeling is that Killing Floor 3 was definitely not ready for launch yet. While it’s a bit disappointing for those who pre-ordered the game, they will ultimately enjoy a better experience at launch.

However, we will have to wait and see how the Specialist system evolves, as the team still seems committed to launching this formula. This feature is clearly tied to the monetization system, and not necessarily player-friendly. Therefore, we’ll have to wait for further official news and the announcement of the new release date for Killing Floor 3.
