Judas is the new game in development by Ghost Story Games, a team led by Ken Levine. Known as the main creative mind behind the Bioshock series and the great classic System Shock 2.

The game was first revealed at The Game Awards 2022, attracting significant interest from fans. Marking Ken Levine’s return to storytelling after a 10-year of absence, following the Bioshock Infinite DLC, Burial at Sea Episode 2. With a release planned for 2025.

The year-end interview comes from Gamesindustry.biz, which interviewed Ken Levine about Judas. As he shared insights not only about the game but also about the type of narrative it offers, touching on contemporary themes like Artificial Intelligence and more.

Levine reflected on how challenging it was to move away from the type of storytelling and design approach of Bioshock. Especially after nearly 10 years of changes in the gaming landscape and narrative techniques. Yet to him, video games as a medium offer unparalleled interactivity in storytelling.

Judas: Approach to NPC Writing and World-Building

In the interview, Levine dives deep into the methods used to shape the world of Judas. He compares Bioshock’s experience as a “corridor,” where players were guided through a linear narrative, opposed  to the more dynamic approach of Judas.

The focus is on organic storytelling. A world that reacts to and is shaped by the player’s actions. Key NPCs will be able to hold meticulously designed grudgets, to feel “humane” rather than a caricature. Admitting he was inspired from the human narratives of The Last of Us , but also the innovative storytelling of Inside.

What We Know About Judas by Ghost Story Games

Judas is the debut game by Ghost Story Games, a rebrand and new beginning for Ken Levine and the former Irrational Games team. Despite still being under the Take-Two Interactive umbrella, Judas offers a sci-fi first-person shooter reminiscent of Bioshock with a touch of System Shock 2.

Players assume the role of Judas aboard the spaceship Mayflower, carrying the last human survivors to Proxima Centauri. A society controlled by computers dictates laws and behaviors, and Judas plays a pivotal role through their actions.

Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game is set to launch in March 2025 on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. Fans eagerly await to see if Ghost Story Games’ fresh narrative approach can wow players as the original Bioshock did.
