Rust is the renowned first-person survival game by Facepunch Studios. Released in Early Access in December 2013 and fully launched with version 1.0 on 8th February 2018. Rust stands as one of the pioneering open-world survival games, initially created as a DayZ clone but standing out due to its crafting system.
Despite a problematic launch, the team remained committed to the game. Today, Rust is one of the most-played games on Steam, seeing an increasing player base every year.
Rust: New Player Record at the End of the 11th Anniversary
As 2024 ends, the team wraps up Rust’s Christmas celebrations, gearing up for the new year. They bring some exciting news about Rust’s 2024 performance, shared by executive producer Alistair McFarlane.
He announces a new record for Rust set at the start of the new year, with 262,284 players recorded on 2nd January 2025, surpassing the previous record set in 2021. McFarlane thanks the community for their support and promises a 2026 (or did he mean 2025?) full of surprises.

Rust: What’s New in 2024
Starting 2025, the team recalls all the updates released in Rust during 2024, including:
- World Update 2.0: A massive map expansion.
- Road Renegades: New vehicles like motorcycles and bicycles.
- Bags To Riches: The much-awaited backpack for carrying more items and the metal detector.
- Waves Of Change: New cargo ship and helicopter events, among others.
- Lighting The Way: Options to explore better at night.
- Seismic Shift: Explosive sensors, barricades, and more.
All accompanied by over 300 QoL changes and numerous game fixes, along with the addition of 5 new in-game weapons. A content-packed 2024 summarized in a 2-minute recap trailer.
Rust and What Awaits in 2025
The team isn’t just celebrating; they’re already sharing what’s coming next for Rust. First up is the new Primitive Update, arriving on February 6, 2025. This update focuses on melee gameplay, introducing medieval-style armor and weapons, complete with 3 siege weapons. An exciting update that will shake up gameplay.
Beyond the Primitive Update, the team promises a Cooking 2.0 to overhaul food mechanics with new buffs and a new Jungle Biome featuring dangerous wildlife. An exciting start to 2025 with more surprises in store for survival fans!
