Doom Eternal’s game director, Hugo Martin, recently joined IGN’s James Duggan to show off the game’s multiplayer mode. Battlemode is an asymmetrical arena deathmatch where 2 demons take on a fully-kitted Doomslayer in a contest of skill versus strategy.

Martin clarifies right from the start that in this game of cat and mouse, the demons are the mice. Taking on a Demonslayer with every single weapon in the game as his disposal is something no demon would want to do, but with just the right tactics and solid teamwork, it is possible. The Demonslayer, on the other hand, will need to demonstrate a high level of skill to take full advantage of his arsenal and manage his resources efficiently.

You can listen to Martin talk about Battlemode and watch some actual gameplay at the same time in the video below:

It’s the little twists that seem to make this game mode very interesting. For one, the Doomslayer has to kill both demons in order to win a round while the demons only need to kill the Demonslayer. If the remaining demon stays alive on its own long enough, the other one respawns. Every 4th round also sees the addition of special power-ups come into play, and the stealth mini-game of the Doomslayer trying to break line-of-sight with the demons should keep all players on their toes at all times.

You’ll get to challenge friends in Battlemode when Doom Eternal launches on March 20th for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The Switch port should arrive shortly after.
