While the GTA 6 fever is still raging, with the 26 October presumed rumor of an announcement, did end up with nothing as expected. Although a curious case regarding GTA6.com Domain, with a Take Two counsel reaching out to the owner of the domain asking him to transfer the domain to them as it violates their rights to the GTA Marks. Urging him to do so before 3pm BST October 26 2023, before taking any legal action if he doesn’t comply.

In the meanwhile fans keep them entertained with any source of news about the game, either from the 2022 announcement, some of the leaked early build footage, as well as the evolution of the Rage Engine.

Rage Engine

The Rage Engine, acronym for Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, is a proprietary Engine developed by Rockstar Games and has been based on the Angel Game Engine, while also moving away from the Renderware engine used up until 2004. The very first game to utilize the Rage Engine was Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis. Later refined and used in Grand Theft Auto IV, Midnight’s Club: Los Angeles and Red Dead Redemption.

Boasting some impressive visuals, as well as being able to handle a variety of aspects, like complex AI, large streaming of data, various weather effects and a pretty solid network. So impressive that earned a spot in “10 Best Game Engines of [the 7th] Generation” by IGN.

What to expect

The latest iteration of the Engine is at RAGE 8, used in Red Dead Redemption II, the 2018 sequel, that despite being over 5 years old now still put to shame most of the modern releases, with impressive visuals, great AI, and uses of DX12 and Vulkan API, making the title a well optimized on a variety of hardware.

What we can expect can be looked at the RAGE 8 implementation in RDR2, combined with the new technologies and advancement we’ve seen in the last few years.

Water, Vehicles and Visuals

According to rumors we’re back to Vice City, or at least a water based city. Thus improvement on the water physics is a given, from the already well experienced implementation in GTA V.

Vehicles are a staple of the franchise, and it’s a given that more realistic models are expected. With more accurate deformation and damages.

All of it powered by new lighting technologies. With official Ray Tracing implementation in the current gen consoles,  RT is surely one of the most expected features for this new entry. Maybe with Path Tracing like the amazing results of Cyberpunk 2077 in Overdrive mode, available for those with beefy hardware.
