GTA 6: Why the Florida Joker is Suing Rockstar For 10 Million Dollars
Lawrence Sullivan, “Florida Joker,” seeks damages from Rockstar Games
Lawrence Sullivan, a man from Florida who calls himself “Florida Joker,” is threatening to sue Rockstar Games for using his likeness in the upcoming GTA 6.
Sullivan’s threats follow a highly publicized legal case in which Rockstar Games took action against an 18-year-old hacker who leaked Grand Theft Auto 6 details and footage and threatened to leak the game’s source code in 2023.
In that leaked footage, Florida Joker alleges Rockstar used his likeness for a character. Unless the GTA V developer pays $10 million for his “suffering and pain” and “defamation of character,” he promises to take action against the gaming company.
In a TikTok video, Florida Joker has sent a final video warning saying that unless Rockstar Games pays up the $10 million, he will break Arion Kurtaj, the 18-year-old hacker recently imprisoned, out of his confinement, where they will then work together to hack the Rockstar again and leak more of the upcoming game.
What’s good for all of us is that Florida Joker has set a deadline for Rockstar, demanding that the $10 million be paid by January 14 – just a few days away. So, one way or another, we will likely see a resolution within the next week.
For all those who remember, Rockstar Games has been sued before for using real-life people’s likenesses. In 2014, Lindsay Lohan sued Rockstar, claiming they used her likeness for Lacey James in GTA V, the famous billboard model posing with the peace sign.
There was another lawsuit in 2014 filed by Karen Graven, a reality TV star who also alleged Rockstar Games used her likeness and story. Both lawsuits were dismissed. GTA V has gone on to be the second best-selling game of all time behind Minecraft, with an estimated $7.7 billion in revenue and 190 million copies sold.
Only time will tell if Florida Joker’s claims are accurate or if his demands will be met. Any compensation for emotional distress, trademark infringement, invasion of privacy, or defamation will be sorted out by the courts if need be, and if any action goes further, you can expect it to be big news, with GTA 6 likely to be the biggest release of the year when it finally comes.
Rockstar Games will continue with the development of GTA 6, with recent rumors hinting at a release date of February 7, 2025. There’s no official word from Rockstar, but we can dream.
