GOG has just made it easier to relive gaming history by enabling classic titles to run seamlessly on modern PCs. The GOG Preservation Program is an attempt by the platform to “ensure classic games remain playable on modern systems.” The program keeps the legacy of hundreds of games alive while keeping them DRM-free, allowing everyone to play iconic titles.
As technology continues to evolve and gaming hardware improves, older games often become incompatible, with many classic titles unfortunately lost to time. GOG, however, has a solution, offering enhanced versions of retro games that run smoothly on today’s PCs.
The newly announced GOG Preservation Program is the PC platform’s new initiative to save classic games. The program’s homepage asks players to fight back against time as it’s “erasing the games that shaped you.” Together, GOG wants players to help it “fight back” with its Preservation Program, which features an initial 100 games and 501 game improvements.
GOG’s Preservation Program isn’t only about selling games but to preserve them for future generations of gamers. GOG’s efforts benefit both nostalgic gamers and new players eager to explore gaming’s past. At a time when so many developers and publishers are releasing remasters of older games, GOG is looking to preserve gaming’s history as it’s remembered without compatibility issues.
On top of preserving these classic and iconic games, GOG is also making improvements to games over time, something it’s sharing with Preservation Stories. One game so far improved as part of the program is Diablo, which features several fixes to improve stability, fix mouse issues, and improve upscaling. The GOG Preservation Program has an initial 100 games, including Baldur’s Gate, Fallout, Theme Hospital, Dungeon Keeper 2, and Resident Evil. By saving classic titles, GOG is ensuring unforgettable gaming experiences are never lost as technology evolves.
