God of War Live-Service Game Canceled by Sony

Sony has confirmed it has canceled a God of War live-service game following a review. The news comes after Sony and PlayStation revealed they were scaling back titles in search of quality over quantity.

In 2022, Sony proudly announced they were planning 12 live-service games by the end of 2025. But, as 2024 ended, the company had canceled most, with only the mysterious Fairgame$ and Bungie’s long-anticipated Marathon still in development.

Speaking to Bloomberg, a Sony spokesperson has confirmed that two more games have been canceled, including an unknown game from Bend Studio and a God of War live-service game from Bluepoint Games. Sony and PlayStation are working with Bluepoint Games and Bend Studio to find another project for them.

Why the God of War Live-Service Game Was Canceled

Despite the massive success of PlayStation’s Helldivers 2, which is now being adapted into a movie, other games, such as Concord were not as successful. With the gaming industry reeling from layoffs and poor sales, Sony wants to scale back plans to deliver more high-quality titles.

What’s Next for God of War?

The God of War franchise shouldn’t suffer in the long-term. PlayStation CEO Herman Hulst told Famitsu last month that PlayStation was “learning a lot” and they are committed to “developing live service titles along with the story-driven single-player titles that our players want.” So, a future single-player God of War game will likely come sooner than later.

The God of War franchise remains a cornerstone of PlayStation’s lineup. But it will be interesting to see if they fit multiplayer into its next game.
