Gangs of Sherwood is the latest game from Nacon, set to be released on November 30th, 2023, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series XIS. It takes place in the familiar Robin Hood universe from stories and films, but with a different twist from what you may remember from earlier renditions.
Gangs of Sherwood takes place in a modified version of the well-known Robin Hood universe. The Sheriff of Nottingham has stolen the Lionheart, a magical stone that has enhanced his troops, allowing him to control and exploit the citizens.
The city where the game begins, Locksley, is under attack from a massive, mysterious cannon that you and your group aim to stop in order to save the city and its residents.
The world is a mix of medieval architecture combined with modern technology. In Gangs of Sherwood, you’ll visit some familiar locations like the Sherwood Forest and Nottingham.
You can choose from 4 different characters, all of whom fight together in a group. You can play as Robin, who, just like in the famous stories, fights with a bow and arrow in Gangs of Sherwood.
Friar Tuck is a more supportive character who can provide the group with additional healing. He also wields a large hammer-like weapon to aid in combat.
You can also play as Little John, who defeats all enemies in close combat with his fists. He has reinforced fists to deliver powerful blows to the enemy.
The last playable character is Marian, a deadly assassin who fights with an electric whip and knives. She is also the daughter of the Sheriff of Nottingham and aims to undo her father’s actions.
Each character has unique abilities to defeat enemies. These abilities can be switched to match your playstyle.
Your goal, as in many other games, is to create the largest combo possible to increase your battle score and improve your combat skills. The larger your combo at the end of a fight, the more money you earn.
In the arenas where you fight, you can move relatively freely to gain some distance from enemies and prepare for the next attack. If you launch enemies into the air with combos, you can use your hook to pull yourself towards them and execute attacks in the air.
Each arena has various traps that you can activate to deal significant damage to enemies, whether it’s an exploding barrel or a stalactite that you can drop from the ceiling onto your foes.
The characters have unique Rebel abilities that can deal tremendous damage to groups of enemies, or you can activate the Rebel Instinct, which enhances your attacks and makes them faster.
Gangs of Sherwood features various types of enemies, each with their own movesets and weapons, ensuring that the game remains engaging. The different bosses are also uniquely designed, offering variety and a challenge.
The game is not set in an open world; instead, you must choose which mission to play next, with new levels unlocking over time.
During missions, you’ll encounter residents of the respective locations who need your help. Assisting them will reward you with gold, making it worthwhile to lend a hand to the people.
During missions, be on the lookout for hidden spots where treasures may be hidden, whether they consist of gold or valuable artifacts.
Once you’ve completed the main story, the game is not over. After finishing the story, additional modes will unlock, giving you more gameplay time.
In Gangs of Sherwood, you have a hideout, a main base where you return after each mission. Here, you can level up your characters with the XP gained from battles or unlock new abilities with your gold. You can also purchase outfits for your characters using in-game currency to enhance your appearance in combat.
After completing these tasks, you can start the next mission, so the game progresses in the form of consecutive missions.
The name of the game, Gangs of Sherwood, implies that you can play the game in co-op mode. You can play it with up to 3 friends, with each person taking on one of the characters. This allows you to make the most of the various character synergies, better than playing with bots, although that’s an option too.
