SQUARE ENIX is celebrating the birthday of Final Fantasy XV, as it turns five years old, and we’re celebrating by exploring its past and successes.

Final Fantasy XV was first announced in 2006 as a spin-off title for the PlayStation 3 called Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
After an incredibly long development period of six years, it would become Final Fantasy XV.
That change meant a re-written story, re-worked cutscenes and characters, and a new director in Hajime Tabata.
The release was still four years away, but those years helped SQUARE ENIX build a fantasy world based on reality.
When Final Fantasy XV launched, reviews from fans and critics were positive, with the game’s open-world environment and action-based real-time battle system a particular highlight.
I always loved the Final Fantasy turn-based combat. Although I struggled to get to grips with the new system in Final Fantasy XV, I can appreciate how the shift in design helped reinvigorate the series for a younger audience.
And that’s where Final Fantasy XV has succeeded and continues to do so. It manages to satisfy both returning and new fans.
Its NPCs are informative, the world beautiful, weapons wide-ranging, story well crafted, and Chocobos delightful as ever.
There is still that fear that you could run out of Hit Points (HP) or Magic Points (HP), but at the same time, you feel that you have better control over the battles.
The most disappointing thing for me was that many of the planned DLCs, which would help expand the characters, were canceled.
Although, one DLC that did make it was Comrades, a multiplayer mode that allows you to step away from Noctis, Ignis, Gladiolus, Regis, and Lunafreya, and instead play as a custom avatar to uncover a part of the story not found in the main campaign.
For anyone still puzzled by some of the campaign, a book, Final Fantasy XV: The Dawn of the Future, explains some of the missing DLC and story pieces.
With Final Fantasy XVI seemingly still a long, long way from release, maybe it’s time to jump back into Final Fantasy XV and celebrate an incredible five years.
