In a long-awaited confirmation, Xbox head Phil Spencer has revealed plans for an Xbox handheld console. Speaking to Bloomberg, Spencer confirmed Microsoft is experimenting with prototypes but warned a potential device was a long way off.
Spencer has long teased us with a possible handheld Xbox console, with rumors first circulating in 2023 when a document from the FTC versus Microsoft trial regarding the company’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard leaked, showing various Microsoft and Xbox products. Spencer’s latest words has fans excited for a console that could rival the Steam Deck or upcoming Switch 2.
A potential Xbox handheld console would come into a market likely occupied by the upcoming Switch 2 and Steam Deck. Microsoft will want to focus on the core strengths it’s been building over the last few years, in particular, the Xbox Game Pass and cloud capabilities. Many think it could be a hybrid console like Nintendo’s Switch.
Microsoft, according to Spencer, is interested in acquiring more companies to break into more markets. Whenever, if ever, an Xbox handheld device releases, Microsoft may have to rethink its current strategy or compete with itself, as the Xbox Game Pass is available across multiple platforms, including Steam Deck, Meta Quest, Amazon Fire TV, and mobile.
