Why Horror Games Are Especially Popular at Halloween
Before we jump straight into the games, we want to say a few words about why the fascination for horror games suddenly skyrockets during Halloween. During Halloween, people are looking for a spooky experience full of suspense. This requires a dark and eerie atmosphere. Unfortunately, in real life, especially in big cities, this atmosphere is no longer common, as everything is brightly lit.
But during Halloween, people want to engage with the supernatural, spooky, and mythical, fitting the occasion. This is where horror games come into play. These games offer the perfect interactive opportunity to create these moods and transport you into a fictional and spooky world, providing the perfect thrill at home. Enough talking, let’s get started with the top 5 Halloween games.
Alan Wake 2
The first game we want to start with today is Alan Wake 2. This game is brand new, from 2023, and tells the story of the writer Alan Wake. To understand the entire story of the game, I recommend playing its predecessor, which has even received a remastered version. Alan Wake 2 picks up where the first game left off. However, the second part introduces a new character, Saga Anderson, an FBI agent investigating several murders in Bright Falls.
In the game, there are numerous supernatural beings. However, they often lurk in the dark and can only be seen with a flashlight. Darkness plays a central role in the game because, without your flashlight, you can easily be caught off guard. To defeat enemies, you need to weaken them with the light before finishing them off with conventional weapons. There is a lot to explore in the world, and many puzzles to solve in Bright Falls. With its central theme of darkness, Alan Wake 2 is one of the best Halloween games.
Still Wakes the Deep
Next, we come to a completely new game, Still Wakes the Deep. This is a first-person horror game from this year, developed by The Chinese Room. The game is set on an oil platform in the North Sea in 1975. You take on the role of Caz McLeary, a simple worker on the Beira D platform, which is hit by a catastrophic storm. But the storm isn’t the only spooky thing — mysterious threats also appear, frightening you and the rest of the crew.
In Still Wakes the Deep, you can’t even defend yourself, so every step is a threat, with the focus mainly on stealth and exploration. You will have to keep running, which becomes increasingly difficult as the platform floods and is further destroyed. The game offers a mix of horror from the natural disaster and the closer threat from creatures nearby. The atmosphere is very oppressive and is further intensified by the tight corridors. The game isn’t long, taking about five hours on average. Nevertheless, it provides a very intense and captivating horror experience, making it worth playing.
Dead Space Remake
The next game we want to talk about is the Dead Space Remake from 2023. The game is set on the USG Ishimura, a massive mining spaceship in space. Unfortunately, the spaceship has been overrun by malicious creatures known as Necromorphs. You play as Isaac Clarke, an engineer trying to survive this catastrophe and uncover the secrets behind it. The remake features improved graphics and modern gameplay. Additionally, the audio design has been reworked, making everything sound even more eerie and frightening.
In the game, you must defeat the Necromorphs. Your weapon fires lasers arranged in a line, allowing you to precisely shoot off enemy limbs. This helps conserve resources as your weapon is highly effective. Some sections of the game even have zero gravity, making the game even more varied. There are also some puzzles to solve, but you’re always on the run from the deadly Necromorphs, providing a constant threat — exactly what you would expect from a Halloween game. This tension is heightened by the constant noises you hear on the ship, increasing the fear factor. Additionally, some jump scares will definitely get your heart racing.
Until Dawn
Now we come to Until Dawn. This game originally came out in 2015 and was only available for PlayStation. However, there is now an improved version available for PC and PlayStation 5. The game revolves around a group of eight friends staying together in a remote mountain lodge. But soon, a deadly game of life and death begins. The game is set a year after two sisters disappeared during a party at the lodge. After this year, the brother of the sisters wants to return to the lodge with some friends to honor their memory, but the trip quickly takes a horrific turn.
The core of Until Dawn is the Butterfly Effect — small decisions change everything. That’s why decisions in the game are so important; they determine the fate of the group members. You have to make decisions under pressure, which can make you feel stressed over and over again. The game often plays with typical horror movie motifs like those found in Scream or other teen slasher films. The game plays with the characters’ fears, and you can easily relate to the characters, experiencing the horror for yourself.
Silent Hill 2
Lastly, we come to Silent Hill 2. Originally a horror game from 2001, a remake of this classic was recently released. The game is regarded by many as the best horror game of all time and is highly popular among fans. You play as James Sunderland, who receives a letter from his deceased wife. In the letter, James is asked to come to Silent Hill, and he does so, hoping that his wife is still somewhere out there. But in Silent Hill, James finds mostly painful truths about himself and his relationship with his wife, Mary.
Silent Hill 2 focuses primarily on psychological horror, dealing with themes like guilt, repression, and self-loathing. You’ll also face many powerful enemies, but James is just an average man with no significant combat skills. This makes every encounter with the iconic monsters a real threat, just as you’d expect from the best Halloween games. The enemies reflect James’s fears, forcing him to confront his own fears and inner demons.
