A new trailer has been circulating online in recent days, showcasing The Defiant. A new FPS from China that presents the Sino-Japanese conflict during World War II. A scenario rarely shown in games, which could prove to be interesting.

The Defiant – The trailer for the new FPS from China in COD style

Just in the past few days, a trailer for a mysterious new shooter set during World War II has been circulating online. It’s The Defiant (or alternatively “The Resistance”), a game developed by Hoothanes, which released the trailer on 14th September 2024.

A trailer that seems to transport us to 1940s China during the Japanese occupation, one of the bloodiest conflicts rarely explored in-depth by the gaming genre. The trailer has a distinctly cinematic cut with numerous clips from the gameplay. And at times strongly resembling missions from Call of Duty: World at War and World War II.

Mostly showing a trailer set at night, where it seems that as part of the resistance, we’ll have both action-packed missions and a good dose of stealth missions. Additionally, we’ll have a companion who seems to accompany us through most of the missions.

What to expect from The Defiant and the Hoothanes team

The Defiant (or The Resistance), from its original name 抵抗者, seems to have drawn a lot of attention, thanks to the recent success of Black Myth: Wukong by Game Science. Which achieved huge sales not only in the global market but also locally in China. Many hoping to see something similar in other game genres as well.

The Hoothanes team decided to take advantage of the moment by releasing the trailer for The Defiant on Bilibili and simultaneously on YouTube, opening a dedicated account on 14th September 2024. The game appears to be trying to challenge Call of Duty and the more recent Battlefield games, focusing on the second Sino-Japanese conflict during WW2. Still in development, the game has captured a fair amount of interest.

Many, therefore, hope that the game will handle the delicate theme with seriousness and without overdoing it. From what we’ve seen, it can be inferred that some weapons have been inserted as placeholders. The weapons market during the Warlord Era led to copies of the Mauser C96 like the Tu-711, and some Colt 1911s and Stens were sent to aid the resistance. However, it’s odd to see a pistol with a compact, screw-on suppressor and not of artisanal design, in the hands of the resistance.

In short, there’s still much to see before giving a final verdict on the game, which is still in full development. That said, The Defiant has good potential to explore a conflict rarely covered in games and, above all, to take advantage of an ideal moment to enter the global market with a well-executed single-player shooter.
