Microsoft wants to attract new developers to the Xbox ecosystem

Xbox Research, the team dedicated to player experience, is expanding to focus on the developers within the Xbox community. It welcomes feedback from external developers to improve the Xbox experience, making the ecosystem more appealing.

How Xbox Research is Shaping the Future of Game Development

Xbox Research – The division is expanding its horizons for the Future of Games

In an official post in the Microsoft Game Dev section, published on September 30th, Miguel Lopez the Contributing Editor for Microsoft Game Dev, announces that the Xbox Research division will now expand outside the players’ feedback and experience. It will also work closely with developers in the Xbox ecosystem.

The goal is to gather insights and data on how to improve the developer experience when creating games. A program similar to the player studies, but aimed at developers. The objective is to further expand Xbox’s appeal, with a particular focus on developers who prefer Sony and Nintendo platforms.

Microsoft wants to know why developers are not bringing games to Xbox

The program, as Lopez reiterates, will also be open to NON-partner developers of Microsoft. Dr. Deborah Hendersen, Principal User Researcher of Xbox, especially invites developers who prefer to use Nintendo and PlayStation platforms over Microsoft’s.

In short, Xbox, which for many has long since lost the “console war”, is trying every way possible to attract new developers to its ranks. They aim to bring a lineup of exclusive games capable of competing with PlayStation and Nintendo. Especially in the past year, as PlayStation enjoyed titles like Black Myth: Wukong, Helldivers 2, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, to name a few.

Xbox – Microsoft’s Challenges in Entering the Asian Market

Certainly, Microsoft’s Achilles’ heel is the Asian market. A market where PlayStation and Nintendo dominate, with both AAA and Indie games. Xbox’s lack of presence in the Asian market dates back to the Xbox 360 era, which failed to establish a strong presence, with poor support from Xbox. It’s only with recent efforts from Game Pass and stronger ties with Capcom and Atlus that Xbox has managed to gain even a minimal presence in the Asian market.

Although Xbox’s appeal is somewhat mixed, with one of the worst examples being Tango Gameworks, behind Hi-Fi Rush. Despite the global appreciation of Hi-Fi Rush and expectations for a second installment, the announcement of layoffs in May 2024 was questionable. It was only through Krafton’s intervention that the Japanese team at Tango Gameworks was saved. In short, Xbox Research certainly has much to learn, provided that the feedback received is truly listened to. Thus, we’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.
