The Halo series is a sci-fi shooter series by Bungie. Developed by 343 Industries, now known as Halo Studio, it debuted in 2001 with Halo: Combat Evolved. An Xbox-exclusive franchise, and with Microsoft acquiring Bungie, it became one of Xbox’s big icons.
The series has had a good comeback in recent years with remasters and the new Halo Infinite. Not to mention the Halo World Championships in October 2024, where the team announced several titles in development. Including a showcase of Unreal Engine 5 features, confirming the decision to abandon the Slipspace Engine.
Halo: The News of the Massive Leak
The news broke on 25th December 2024, surprising many. Apparently, Christmas Day saw a massive data leak regarding Halo, with 90GB of data spanning from 1998 to 2024.
The leak, dubbed the Halo Digsite Archive, comes from the project and website created by members of 343 Industries and community modders. A site aimed to restore cut content from games and provide it as content for modders. Other members not tied to the leak have confirmed its authenticity.
Well, all the Halo Digsite stuff leaked.

FAQ:
-I nor any of the recent Digsite departures did this
-Personally don’t care if modders use anything here how they see fit, MS might not agree
-Some is old WIP (i.e. H2E3 work is at least 6 months old) so check official releases first pic.twitter.com/4XbMKa2JMj
Halo Leak: What Data Was Leaked Online?
The size of the leak, around 90GB of data, clearly shows the amount of content leaked. The main data includes:
- Bungie’s Technical Manual covering almost all games.
- Debug and DLL files for testing and debugging games in the Master Chief Collection.
- Halo Macworld, the famous E3 2000 build of Halo with many features and content.
- Removed levels from the first three Halo games, Reach, and the spin-off Halo 3 ODST.
- Numerous cut content across the series.
- Several pre-release tools for Halo 3, Halo 2 for Windows Vista, and Master Chief Collection for Xbox One.
More content will likely follow soon, and the community is eager to create and restore removed game content.
Halo, Microsoft, and the Community: The Consequences of the Leak
This is shocking news not just for Microsoft but also for the community. The leak violated the NDA with Microsoft. And not only marks the end of the Digsite project but also a clear separation of Microsoft from the modder community going forward.
The leak decision also stems from a growing problem over the years: total neglect or support from the Halo Studios leadership, despite the massive free work behind the modding projects. Leading many members to distance themselves. The ned result, is that we may no longer see official modding support, especially on Xbox consoles.
