Death Stranding is the award-winning and highly praised first game from Kojima Productions. Released back in 2019 as a PS4 exclusive, it later arrived on PC the following year. Marking the success of Hideo Kojima’s first game after leaving Konami in 2015.

A bizarre yet fascinating game, where you play as the delivery man Sam Porter Bridges in a USA devastated by a mysterious catastrophe. Its success led to the release of a Director’s Cut in 2021 for PS5, and later on PC. It has now landed on Xbox just a few days ago, with a price cut for the occasion.

Death Stranding – The Surprise Arrival on Xbox

The news comes as a surprise from the 505 Games team, who is acting as the game’s publisher alongside Sony. They announced on 7th November 2024 the availability of Death Stranding in its Director’s Cut Edition on Xbox Series X/S. The Ultimate version of the game from Kojima Productions.

This effectively makes Kojima’s masterpiece available on PS4, PS5, PC, iOS devices, and finally on Xbox. However, there is no version for the Nintendo Switch, a project unfortunately too ambitious for the hybrid system from Nintendo. Although, hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch 2 should have the necessary power.

But that’s not all. With the fifth Anniversary of the game, Kojima also announced in the same press conference the news of the acquisition of the game’s rights. Now fully under the control of Kojima Productions. This is significant, as Kojima is now more “cautious” after the events with Konami and the IPs he worked on.

In further celebrating this news, the team also announced that Death Stranding has sold over 19 Million copies worldwide. Receiving numerous nominations, awards, and fan celebrations. They dedicated a video to the community with the hashtag #YourDSStory.

Death Stranding 2: What Are the Chances It Will Launch on Xbox Series X/S?

With this unexpected surprise and Kojima Productions now fully in control of the Death Stranding series’ rights, questions arise about the sequel. Specifically, whether Death Stranding 2 will launch on Xbox Series X/S as planned in 2025. Unfortunately, everything seems to suggest the opposite, given the presence of Sony Interactive Entertainment as the publisher.

Indeed, Death Stranding 2 (DS2) appears to be a PS5 exclusive, and a PC release will only happen later. This is due to the fact that the acquisition of the rights was finalized AFTER the contractual agreements with Sony. However, this doesn’t mean that DS2 won’t eventually come to Xbox, and there is even speculation that the game could also land on the long-awaited Switch 2.
