Released on 20 August 2024, Black Myth: Wukong immediately recorded record-breaking sales, reaching a peak of 2.2 million players just on launch day. Managing to surpass the previous record set by Palworld earlier this year, in less than 24 hours. We’re talking about over 20 million copies sold in these 3 weeks, with half of them sold in just 3 days. In short, a huge success for the Game Science team, who mentioned in a recent interview that Wukong is the result of their dedication as well as failures.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Game Science’s closest investor and partner, Daniel Wu, spoke about how Black Myth: Wukong is the result of a committed team, but also the product of four failures the team experienced. It resulted in $70 million in development since 2017, in a China dominated by mobile games. But it has finally paid off, with profits allowing the team to work without issue on a potential Expansion in the works, similar to the approach taken by Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree.
In the same interview, Wu continued to talk about how the Game Science team plans to capitalize on the series. It seems the team doesn’t plan to bring a direct sequel to Wukong but rather many different stories, all based on Chinese mythology. Additionally, Wu promises that, thanks to Wukong’s success, we could see the next chapter of the series in less than 6 years. In the meantime, counting on a potential Expansion for Black Myth: Wukong, which will allow players to enjoy new content and allow Game Science the opportunity to capitalize on it while continuing to develop potential new games.
