Do you remember when online server shutdown was unheard of? Yes, those were the days. And then when that gate opened, it definitely became an undreaded reality to a lot of favorite classics.
We’ve seen some meet the axe the last couple of years and now that it seems that the gaming world is somehow desensitized to it, more games are in line on the chopping block.
Of course it makes sense that servers cannot be perpetually running especially when there are very few who use it. But still, it begs the question on ownership to the full extent of the game once you paid for it. This will be a standing question for years to pass.
For now, Super Mega Baseball 2 is up and will cease to exist online.
The digital-only game, Super Mega Baseball 2, was officially delisted on January 26, 2024. It came without warning which left a lot of gamers devastated. Fast forward to today, its servers are officially shutting down leaving the game without its online services and features.
Fortunately, there are no online-only achievements, meaning you can still get the 1,000G if you were able to get a copy.
Not much was said regarding the game’s untimely fate even with SMB1 still running. The only official statement was that some licenses expired. This was also shared when Spec Ops was delisted a few days after SMB2. Rumor is, it’s the soundtrack that expired which many argued to just redo the game with a different track.
While that could be a solution, considering that the game is “not new”, putting in a lot of resources to it might not be the best idea.
Super Mega Baseball 2 officially closes its online services today and unfortunately it’s not the end of the shutdowns this year. Classic games like Battlefield 3 and 4, FIFA 22, and NHL 20 are also among the list.

Note that before the servers shutdown, these games have now (or about to) get delisted in the digital forefronts. Like previous online services closures, the physical copy of the games, if they have, are still sold in retailers but probably only until supply lasts. These and the copies already owned will still be playable with its offline features.
