On June 20, the highly anticipated Aliens: Dark Descent was finally released, delighting fans of the Alien series and action-strategy games alike. Aliens: Dark Descent is available for almost all consoles, including PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
In Aliens: Dark Descent, you dive into the world of the renowned Alien universe and crash-land on the planet Lethe, overrun by Xenomorphs. You play as Maeko Hayes and Jonas Harper, along with a few other companions, and must survive on this dangerous planet.
Aliens: Dark Descent offers excellent graphics and promises to keep you on the edge of your seat with unexpected ambushes. It perfectly captures the atmosphere of the Alien universe, thanks to the developers’ attention to detail and the dark mood they’ve created.
In Aliens: Dark Descent, I was offered exciting real-time battles that occasionally pushed me to my limits. The battles were generally very fast, but the slow-motion function allowed me to still plan tactically.
You’ll engage in combat in a vast open world where you have the freedom to make many decisions. You’ll need to choose whether to open a door, potentially avoiding a long corridor, but risking encountering 20 or more enemies. You must make these decisions yourself and live with the consequences.
As the leader of your group, you have to be careful to select your crew strategically. In my experience, it is ideal to always have a good mix of medics and the four different fighter classes to win battles and avoid losing any of your fighters. Because most players, myself included, will experience that in Aliens: Dark Descent, once someone is dead, they stay dead, you should protect your soldiers from death through a good tactical selection of tools and perfect cover.
Over time, your soldiers will level up, so it’s important to choose abilities that best suit your playstyle. Whether you prefer heavy weapon combat or having support turrets, Aliens: Dark Descent offers all these possibilities. You’ll also unlock new abilities for your commanders that support your entire team.
Aliens: Dark Descent provides a captivating gameplay experience with intense battles and a constant fear of losing your team members, which can get your adrenaline pumping.
Even your soldiers will experience fear. Through battles and other events, their fear level will continue to rise, causing them to receive some debuffs and eventually flee. Therefore, I have found that sometimes it’s better to leave a mission prematurely instead of losing your people.
After each mission or even prematurely, you return to your safe ship where you can hire new people, conduct research, and improve weapons. Your injured soldiers can heal here, and you can address their mental illnesses.
Aliens: Dark Descent is a single-player game, but without the need to worry about human allies, you can focus better on your own units.
However, almost no game is perfect right at release. Aliens: Dark Descent unfortunately comes with some bugs that can ruin an entire mission at times. In my case, the mechanic often failed and didn’t open doors properly, making the entire mission unplayable. Even the Safe Rooms, where you’re supposed to lower your fear level, don’t always function as intended.
In the cutscenes, the voices are often not properly synchronized with the video. But since Aliens: Dark Descent is still very new, it can be expected that all these issues will be addressed in the next patches.
