Wyrdsong, the upcoming game from former Skyrim and Fallout developers is no longer an open-world RPG due to continual layoffs at developer Something Wicked Games.

Something Wicked Games has revealed its first game, Wyrdsong, is no longer an open-world RPG, with the game scaled back because of layoffs and a lack of funding.
First announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live in 2022, the fantasy RPG’s team has been reduced to a “skeleton crew,” with the studio’s founder Jeff Gardiner, describing the game’s future to PC Gamer as “tough.”

What Changed in Wyrdsong’s Development?
Originally planned as a fully open-world RPG set in 12th Century Portugal around the Templars, the game’s publisher NetEase had dedicated $13.2 million to the project. But last year, there were layoffs at the company, with Gardiner describing it as a “terrible time” for the industry.
Gardiner continued to say that making a “big open-world RPG” requires “a lot of people” and “a lot of money,” which the gaming industry doesn’t currently have.
How Developer Layoffs Impacted the Game
Now with its skeleton crew, Wyrdsong has been reduced from an open-world game to one with explorable zones. To offer variety and replayability, Something Wicked Games has also added a roguelite system.
The changes to the game, although major, may result in a more refined and polished experience that appeals to gamers while ensuring the long-term future of the studio.
Conclusion
While Wyrdsong is no longer an open-world RPG, Something Wicked Games is still hoping to deliver a unique and high-quality experience. Are you still excited for the game? Let us know in the comments.
