Why Assassin’s Creed Shadows Devs Ignored Elon Musk’s Tweet

There are still quite a few months until the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the latest installment in Ubisoft’s assassin saga, but certainly, the latest trailer continues to generate not only interest but also critics. The latest of which involved billionaire Elon Musk, on his own platform: Twitter (X).

Ubisoft’s Response to Elon Musk’s Comment on Assassin’s Creed

The new trailer for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, presented on 10th June 2024, at Ubisoft Forward, certainly sparked interest but also attracted criticism about the title. Many users were rather disappointed with some of the team’s choices, mainly regarding the character of Yasuke. A rather peculiar choice for this historical figure, which some believe was not due to Yasuke’s uniqueness in the historical context but used to satisfy certain political objectives. Elon’s tweet appears as a reply to user Ian Miles Cheong on Twitter (X), an influencer and journalist with a significant following but also quite provocative. Elon responded to Ian’s comment about Ubisoft choosing Yasuke as a Japanese samurai specifically for DEI, stating that “DEI kills art.”

Elon Musk’s reply tweet to Ian about DEI in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

A decidedly provocative comment, and a brief response from Elon blaming DEI, the acronym for “Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion.” In his view the adherence to political correctness would effectively kill the creativity of every art form, of which the video game medium is often referred to. Despite numerous criticisms not only from prominent figures on social media but also from users, Ubisoft’s team chose not to engage in such conversations. Marc-Alexis Côté, vice president and executive producer of Assassin’s Creed, speaks in an interview with Game File regarding Elon’s tweet.

Marc-Alexis states that Elon is sad and generating hate, but that Elon’s comment deeply disturbed him. He concludes that what Elon says is not the game the team wants to propose and encourages people to try the title before making an incorrect judgment, suggesting a dialogue if they are not convinced after the first “11 minutes and 47 seconds.”

What are the Issues and Criticisms of Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Assassin’s Creed, and particularly Ubisoft, has certainly been the target of negative sentiments from fans due to often questionable choices not only about inclusion but also a radical change in their products, often criticized as “generic.” Changes that many fans did not appreciate and that led to a departure from the original concepts and formulas of certain series, including Assassin’s Creed. In fact, only recently with Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and now with Shadows, has the series returned somewhat to its origins, rather than a purely action based game. Origins focusing on parkouring between buildings and stealth among gameplay options. Proposing a middle ground in Shadows with Naoe for stealth and Yasuke for action.

Even ignoring the criticisms about Yasuke, whether he was a “real” samurai or simply Nobunaga’s companion, other issues remain that have made some people frown. Such as the incorrect use of symbols and emblems, often gratuitous, that do not correspond to the chronological facts of the game. Inaccuracies of seasons with the harvest, or behaviors of some NPCs unrealistic in the Japanese historical context. It is certain, however, that every Western-originated media portraying feudal Japan is often harshly criticized, mostly by non-Japanese. Japanese who often let certain “artistic” choices pass, but praise them when well represented and realized, as in the famous case of Ghost of Tsushima, with the game director and creative director even elected as ambassadors by the mayor of the city of Tsushima.

In short, although there are some valid criticisms of Assassin’s Creed, in the end, you have to get your hands on the game as Marc-Alexis Côté himself says. Hoping, however, that if some of these criticisms are indeed founded, the team does not hide behind the usual excuses but is genuinely engaged in discussions. We will have to wait for the game’s release, scheduled for 12th November 2024, hoping for the game director’s words.
