Ubisoft withdraws from TGS – Is Assassin’s Creed Shadows to blame?
In an abrupt news just ahead of the Tokyo Game Show 2024, Ubisoft has decided to cancel its participation. Canceling the showcase dedicated not only to the new Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but also to the publisher’s other games.
Ubisoft – The News of the Withdrawal from Tokyo Game Show 2024
Just hours before the highly anticipated Tokyo Game Show 2024, Ubisoft suddenly announces its decision to withdraw from the event. A unexpected piece of news, especially considering that Ubisoft Japan had scheduled a 50-minute presentation on the first day of TGS 2024 at 3:00 PM JST (8:00 AM CEST | 2:00 AM EDT).
The presentation was supposed to showcase content for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the new chapter set in Japan, which was expected to be the centerpiece of Ubisoft’s program in Japan. The announcement was made on Ubisoft Japan’s Twitter (X) page and immediately “reposted” by several users, with Ubisoft remaining vague about the real reasons behind the decision. With many users inevitably pointing the finger directly at AC Shadows as the cause.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Delayed – The Reasons Behind the Decision
Ubisoft’s TGS 2024 presentation was not only meant to cover the new Assassin’s Creed Shadows but also upcoming content for Star Wars Outlaws, xDefiant, and the still-popular Rainbow Six Siege. Adding to the complications are some news regarding AC Shadows, which has also been retired for the press previews of next week.
Many speculated that this could lead to the delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. And indeed said speculation came to a realization with the recent announcement on 25 September 2024, as the directive creator for AC Shadows, Marc-Alexis Côté, announced the inevitable delay. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is now set to be released on 14 February 2025 . With the “surprise” that all pre-orders being refunded, while future pre-orders will be honored by also including the first expansion for free.
The “Various Circumstances” cited by Ubisoft are undoubtedly a culmination of multiple factors that seem to have escalated in recent months. In fact, with its recent titles, Ubisoft wasn’t able to meet the sales target, with a rather mixed reception for their games. Just in the past year, Ubisoft’s stock value has dropped by 50%, falling well below its historical low value in 2014. With the delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows to Valentine’s Day, Ubisoft will likely try to regain focus and decide on the future of the company.
