CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that The Witcher 4 is now in full-scale production as the developer focuses on a story away from Geralt. CDPR has yet to reveal an exact release date, but we could see it before the end of 2025.
The Witcher 4 is a significant step for the series as it will be the first in the franchise not to have Geralt as the main protagonist. Announced in 2022, Project Polaris, as it was known then, was described as “the first installment in the new Witcher saga,” with the company hinting at a new trilogy.
Back in August, a financial report revealed The Witcher 4 was ready to move out of its preproduction phase. In CD Projekt Red’s Q3 2024 earnings report, joint CEO Michał Nowakowski has confirmed that “several weeks ago the Polaris team wrapped up preproduction and moved on to full-scale production.” Michal continues to say the company is “very pleased” with the progress on the upcoming RPG. If all goes well, we could get The Witcher 4, or whatever its official name is, by the end of 2025, as expected.

What Fans Can Expect From The Witcher 4
The Witcher 4 is not only a massive shift in terms of story, as Geralt will only be a background character, but CD Projekt Red has moved from its own REDengine to Unreal Engine 5 as part of a “multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games.” Many fans hope the partnership with Epic won’t result in an Epic Store exclusivity deal upon the game’s launch. CDPR has previously stated it won’t be an Epic exclusive title.
What fans can expect with UE5 is a visually stunning open world with cutting-edge features and ultra-realistic graphics. CD Projekt Red’s reputation of building expansive worlds with rich lore will be tested, and with UE5, fans can anticipate a game likely to surpass The Witcher 3 in scale and detail.
While CDPR continues to focus on “single-player triple-A RPGs,” the company has expressed a wish to integrate online features into The Witcher 4. Although it may not result in adding multiplayer, it will be interesting to see what path CD Projekt Red decide to take.
CD Projekt Red’s Commitment to Quality
After Cyberpunk 2077’s rocky launch, CD Projekt Red wants to avoid an unpolished launch with The Witcher 4. When announced in 2022, joint CEO Adam Kicinski said the game was “at least three years away,” which pointed to a 2025 release at the earliest. If CDPR is to put it through a comprehensive testing phase, a late 2025 launch could yet happen.
In March 2023, CD Projekt Red revealed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had sold over 50 million copies, setting high expectations for the upcoming Witcher 4. It’s also worth noting that there are multiple Witcher projects ongoing, including the remaster of Geralt’s first adventure.
Conclusion
While we await more updates as The Witcher 4 enters full-scale production, one thing is certain: CD Projekt Red is pulling out all the stops to create an unforgettable RPG experience. What are your hopes for the next Witcher game? Share your thoughts below.
