The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remake Will

Bethesda is reportedly preparing to shadow drop the long-rumored remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which could come any day this month – according to Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grub.

Speaking on the Power Block podcast, Grubb says he’s been told: “It’s gonna shadow drop here at any moment this month.”

What Is a Shadow drop – and Why Oblivion?

A shadow drop is a surprise, unannounced release. Perhaps most famously, the Sega Saturn shadow-dropped in 1995 as Sega tried to beat Sony’s PlayStation – ultimately, stores didn’t have time to stock them, with poor distribution and limited availability contributing to the console’s failure.

Shadow-dropping games is nothing new, particularly at ZeniMax Media, the owner of Bethesda, as Tango Gameworks, another developer owned by ZeniMax, shadow-dropped Hi-Fi Rush in January 2023. With that in mind, as Oblivion holds a special place in RPG history, a sudden re-release could ignite nostalgia while avoiding overhype burnout.

What We Know About the Oblivion Remake

Bethesda has not confirmed an Oblivion remake, but rumors have been circulating for months following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, in which an “Oblivion Remaster” was cited as an upcoming unannounced Bethesda title in court documents in 2023.

Many expected the game to be announced during the Xbox Developer Direct in January. However, that never materialized. A remake hints at graphics overhaul, with combat tweaks, updated UI, modern quest systems, and support for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

What a Surprise Release Could Mean for Bethesda

Oblivion is a hugely popular game, considered one of the best in the Elder Scrolls series. Since releasing Fallout 76 and Starfield, Bethesda has come under fire for delivering underwhelming titles.

A shadow drop of Oblivion could be a masterstroke, serving as a pre-Elder Scrolls VI hype builder and restoring some goodwill among a fanbase demanding more from the developer. So, we may get TES IV: Oblivion at some point this month. Maybe.

Conclusion

Bethesda is reportedly ready to shadow drop The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remake, which could come any day this month. Would you play Oblivion or do you just want to see TES VI? Let us know in the comments.
