Steam Success: Foundation, the Medieval City Builder, Evolves
After several years in development, Foundation, the medieval city builder, has finally left Early Access. Let’s discover what the game has to offer and the new features!
Foundation is the debut game from indie team Polymorph Games. The studio was founded in 2016 and introduced Foundation for the first time in 2018, with the project later released as Early Access in 2019.
Finally, after 6 years, it has launched with the official version. Offering a fun and relaxing medieval-themed city builder without grids, where we must carefully construct our city in an organic way while managing the resources at our disposal.
Foundation Release Date
After more than 6 years of development, Polymorph Games announces the official release of Foundation. Their first ambitious project, which officially launched on 31 January 2025, leaving Early Access.
They celebrated the release with a dedicated trailer, showcasing the colorful and charming medieval-themed city builder. Featuring a free construction system without the restrictions of building grids. A launch celebrated by the community, excited to see the official release finally happen.
Foundation Gameplay and Main Features
Foundation offers a medieval-themed city builder where we can create the castle of our dreams thanks to:
- Building System: A free construction system without grids and with procedurally generated maps.
- Tools: Many options to create modular buildings by combining multiple pieces and creating new ones.
- Economy: Manage our inhabitants, assign roles, tax, trade, and sell resources. With the Painting Tool, we can also design roads, create patrols, and more.
- 3 Kingdom Orders: We choose between 3 Paths for our kingdom: Labor, Clergy, and Kingdom, specializing in one or combining them.
All of this is complemented by essential features like various game difficulties and a Creative Mode to let our imagination run wild, further enhanced by mod support. Not to mention a medieval-themed soundtrack created in collaboration with veterans from Paradox, behind the music of Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis IV.
Foundation: The Development
The Canadian team at Polymorph Games certainly dedicated a lot of time to the development of Foundation. The indie studio was created in 2016 with the goal of bringing an immersive city builder experience. The project was funded on Kickstarter in 2018 with an initial Alpha, aiming to leave Early Access within a year.
However, development was extended further due to the 2020 pandemic. Improving and adding new features over the years, with the release date of 31 January 2025 announced in December 2024. The announcement was also accompanied by a playable demo, available here on Steam:
In Conclusion
A journey lasting over 6 years, but it has finally paid off with the official launch of Foundation. But it’s certainly not over, and the team will continue to support the title with updated versions. The GOG version is also coming soon, with news about future plans that could include a console release.
