Star Citizen Has Now Raised $800m and Still in Alpha
Star Citizen, more than a decade in development, has now surpassed $800 million in funding, and the game is still in alpha. Cloud Imperium initially slated its release for 2014 after a successful Kickstarter campaign but has recently delayed it again until 2026.
Since its 2012 campaign launch on Kickstarter, Cloud Imperium has now raised over $800m for Star Citizen, and the game continues to be in a playable alpha state 13 years later.
The multiplayer, space trading and combat sim was described as closing “towards the finish line” last March by Cloud Imperium CEO Chris Roberts, but a 1.0 release date is still nowhere to be seen.

How Did Star Citizen Raise $800 Million?
Star Citizen began on Kickstarter in 2012, with the game quickly smashing funding goals, raising a Guinness World Record of over $39m on March 4, 2014.
Since its crowdfunding days, the game has been funded by players spending money to enter the public alpha and purchasing in-game items via microtransactions, subscriptions, and merch. The Star Citizen funding stats live tracker shows over 5m players have now helped raise over $800m.
Why Is Star Citizen Still in Alpha?
Star Citizen is a very ambitious project, with Cloud Imperium promising a massive, persistent universe for players to explore, trade, and wage war. A game with such extensive gameplay features requires a long development cycle, and the game has consistently faced technical challenges and performance issues, pushing its release date further back.
Despite its substantial budget, the game’s ever-expanding scope and technical ambitions continue to push back the timeline for a full release. Additionally, we have not even addressed the Squadron 42 campaign, the story-driven component of the game, which features renowned actors such as Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Andy Serkis, and Mark Strong.
When Will Star Citizen Release
Nearly 12 years after the initial release date of Star Citizen, fans could be forgiven for thinking the space simulation will never officially launch. Last March, Roberts stated that the game was nearly ready; however, its latest delay means we may not see it until 2026 at the earliest.
There is a strong possibility that by the time the game is released, it will have raised over $1 billion in funding. For now, the game is playable, though not in a completely stable state.
