It’s a brand new 2.5D adventure for the blue hedgehog

2017’s Sonic Mania, a simple but effective title in retro fashion, which won the hearts of fans and newcomers, Sega has returned once again to working on brand new titles and remasters on their iconic blue hedgehog mascot.

The result is that we’re getting a new adventure for Sonic and the gangs in the form of Sonic Superstars. A modern Sonic game with a 2D aesthetic while using 3d models, as well as featuring for the first time a 4-player multiplayer mode.

Story

Taking place in the Northstar Islands, Sonic & Co. will have to deal with a new threat from Dr. Eggman. Who has allied himself with Fan the Hunter and a brand new mysterious character, revealed from the recent trailers to be Trip the Sungazer. The Trio of Trouble is planning to turn the giant animals who inhabit the islands into powerful Badniks. So it’s up to Sonic, Tails, Amy and Knuckle to visit these new islands and thwart their plans.

Gameplay

Sonic Superstars will feature the platforming at high speed, typical of the series. All powered up with new abilities thanks to the Chaos Emeralds, allowing each character to perform impressive feats, like swim up waterfalls, multiplying themselves, change form and more! Not to mention each of the 4 main cast have their own unique abilities, with Amy’s Piko Piko Hammer, Tails being able to fly briefly, Knuckle’s strong fists and Sonic with his immense speed.

Multiplayer

The biggest feature of this entry is being able to play with or against your friends. Starting from the Co-op mode, which allows you to play with 3 other friends in the main game, thus running across the islands with your favorite characters and facing off against the various bosses.

As well as play against them in Battle Mode. Here you’ll have a prototype, a robot to customize to your likings, with new parts available to unlock by playing. You’ll thus be able to play against AI or other 7 players, comprising various games. From the classic races, collecting the most stars, survival against various hazards, a TDM with electric powers, and more.

Offering a slightly different formula than normal, with the introduction of the Chaos Emeralds, Superstars still kept the high speed side-scroller aspect of the series. Being able to play in co-op with friends will surely give a lot of replayability as the cast has different gameplay styles. While the Multiplayer portion will give even more hours of gameplay, as players try to climb the rankings. All in all it seems to be a nice new entry in the Sonic franchise.
