Skull & Bones: Will it be released on Steam?

Skull & Bones is a pirate-themed title set in the 17th century during the Golden Age of Piracy. Developed and published by Ubisoft, it’s a title with a troubled history but finally seems ready to be launched on February 16, 2024, on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

It’s been a long-awaited anticipation that seems to have finally come to an end, but it has left many players wondering whether Ubisoft’s title will also arrive on Steam.

The Story of Skull & Bones

Skull & Bones is a title developed by Ubisoft’s Singapore division and, naturally published by Ubisoft itself. The pirate-themed title had a tumultuous development and history, beginning as far back as 2013. Initially conceived as an expansion to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, a pirate-themed Assassin’s Creed title highly praised for its naval combat and pirate elements. It then evolved into an MMO under the name Black Flag Infinite, only to be reimagined as a standalone title due to the limitations of the game.

The first significant reveal occurred during E3 2017 with the announcement of the title as Skull & Bones. Unfortunately, the title experienced several delays compared to its initially planned release period, which was originally set for late 2018, then pushed to 2019, and then to 2021. Finally, it was confirmed for March 2023, but it was further delayed until October 2023, with the final official confirmation during the Game Awards 2023 for February 16, 2024.

What Skull & Bones Offers

Skull & Bones, as we can understand, is a pirate-themed title set in an open-world gaming environment mostly covered by the sea. With a third-person perspective, we’ll be able to explore the gaming world aboard our ship and customize it as we please. All of this comes with a single-player campaign as well as online gameplay modes with other players.

What sets Skull & Bones apart from many other pirate and ship titles is its deep gameplay system dedicated to maneuvering and combat at sea. We’ll have various categories of ships, a weather system that will affect maneuvers, as well as sea combat with firearms. All of this is complemented by an Infamy system to unlock new components and become a true terror of the sea, plundering, retrieving treasures, and defeating marine creatures.

Skull & Bones Launch Situation: Will it Arrive on Steam?

A question that many users have asked in recent years and especially leading up to the game’s launch is whether Skull & Bones will also arrive on Steam, despite the various Betas being available only on the Ubisoft Connect platform. Unfortunately, like the most recent Ubisoft titles, Skull & Bones will be released on PC only on Ubisoft Connect and the Epic Games Store. That said, it’s not unlikely that the pirate-themed title could arrive in the future on Valve’s platform, perhaps along with the missing titles on the Steam store.
