IS RUSSIA DISCONNECTING FROM THE INTERNET?
No official word has come out from Russia saying they will disconnect from the external internet.

However, a document circulating social media suggests otherwise.
The document is reportedly a Russian government telegram signed by the deputy minister for digital development Andrei Chernenko.
The order directs Russian businesses to switch to Domain Name Systems (DNS) based in Russia and to move all public resources to the Russian domain zone (.ru).
WHY IS RUSSIA DISCONNECTING FROM THE GLOBAL INTERNET?
The move by Russia is a way to protect themselves from cyber-attacks.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many hacker groups have sought to take down Russian infrastructure and government websites.
Anonymous successfully took down the Russian Ministry of Defence website.
Many believe that Russian officials want to isolate themselves from the rest of the world so they can easily control access to information.
By blocking the global internet, Russia will effectively see complete government censorship.
CAN RUSSIA BLOCK THE GLOBAL INTERNET?
Blocking the external internet is not an easy task, but Russia successfully ran tests in 2019 as they look to isolate themselves from American-influenced media.

Although it took China years to build the Great Firewall that separates them from foreign media and websites, Russia may find it a little easier.
That’s partly due to many companies and organizations already blocking Russian users, businesses, and groups from accessing content because of the conflict in Ukraine.
These companies include Microsoft and Apple, with Russia themselves moving to block social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to restrict the spread of information in Russia.
WHAT DOES RUSSIA DISCONNECTING FROM THE INTERNET MEAN FOR GAMERS?
When Russia disconnects from the global internet, we may see Russian gamers no longer playing on our servers.

As Russian gamers get blocked from joining foreign servers, we could see longer lobby times and less populated games.
We could also see the price of video games rise due to fewer gamers.
Many already use workarounds to the increasing restrictions in Russia, such as using VPNs to access websites and games outside of Russia.
Unfortunately, as more and more banks and credit card companies such as Visa and Mastercard join those already blocking payments in Russia, it is getting increasingly harder for Russian gamers.
It will also mean less streamers and content creators on platforms such as Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook Gaming.
WHEN DOES RUSSIA DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET?
Reports on social media suggest that we could see Russia completely separate from the global internet on March 11.
