Riot Developing League of Legends MMO… Still
Riot is still developing its League of Legends MMO it first announced in December 2020. Fans wondering if it will ever see the light of day were reassured recently when co-founder Marc Merrill confirmed it’s still in the works during an interview, although no ETA for a release date was set.
The League of Legends MMO, first announced in December 2024 and later “reset” in March 2024, is still in development. The news comes from Riot co-founder Marc Merrill who told Game File in an interview that it’s “the project I personally spend the most time on.”
In March last year, Riot decided to reset the project as the developer thought it too similar to other games in the genre. Since then the studio has been radio silent to “to focus on the incredible amount of work” ahead.
Development Progress and Challenges
Riot first revealed the League of Legends MMO in 2020, with fans immediately excited for an all-new experience. However, last year, the studio announced they were hitting the reset button to follow a different direction, casting doubt on whether the MMO would ever see the light of day.
The shift in direction last year saw Fabrice Condominas take the lead, having previously worked at BioWare and EA. Updates from Riot ceased following the reset, with Merrill stating they would be “going dark” to focus on production and revealing the MMO was “several years” away.
Will Riot’s MMO Ever Be Released?
With Riot Games being one of the biggest names in the industry, fans are hopeful the MMO will eventually launch. Merrill’s latest interview has helped to appease concerned fans, with Riot still committed to delivering the long-anticipated game.
