What is SMITE?

SMITE is a MOBA game developed by Hi-Rez Studios. For those who don’t know what a MOBA is, it stands for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, which includes games like League of Legends or Dota 2. However, SMITE has a unique twist—it’s played from a third-person perspective. Like other MOBAs, you play on three different lanes where you must destroy the enemy’s towers to eventually take down their base. The classic mode is a 5v5 battle.

The game is based on various mythological pantheons, including Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse, Hindu, Chinese, Celtic, Slavic, and Japanese gods. Each round, you can choose one of these characters, known as gods in SMITE, to play.

Each of these gods has four unique abilities that you must actively use. Additionally, there’s always a passive ability that provides a permanent bonus. During the round, you can buy new equipment from the shop using the money you earn by killing minions or players. This equipment makes you stronger and helps you defeat your enemies. There are over 100 different items, each with different base stats and effects.

Aside from the standard 5v5 Conquest mode, which is the most popular, there’s also the Joust mode. In this mode, there’s only one lane and just three players per team. There’s also the Arena mode, which offers faster and more intense battles, where you fight in a 5v5 match in an open arena against the other team.

This game is also free and available on Steam. However, you can buy skins for different gods in the game to stand out. The game also supports cross-play, meaning you can play with players on other consoles.

SMITE 2

SMITE 2 is the latest game in this series, and the alpha for it starts in just a few days on August 27. This game continues the epic SMITE saga with improved gameplay and graphics, thanks to the Unreal Engine 5. All of the over 100 legendary gods you could play in SMITE will also be playable in the sequel. However, the developers aim to make the game even more immersive and bring out the gods’ powers better using Unreal Engine 5.

The game will naturally come with loads of improvements. The first thing that will stand out to any veteran player is the improved graphics compared to its predecessor. Nearly all animations have been enhanced and refined as well. SMITE 2 is also trying something new called “MOBA Specific Matchmaking.” This matchmaking system not only considers the players’ ranks but also their performance and how well they play with different gods in various roles. The developers aim to create a more balanced and fun experience for everyone.

There will also be new gods for you to master. In the alpha version, the new god Mordred, known from Arthurian legend, will be available at launch. Mordred is a hybrid character who uses both strength and intelligence stats.

SMITE 2 Release & Skins

The closed alpha for SMITE 2 starts in just a few days on August 27. However, you can only access it by purchasing the Founders Edition for €30. If you buy the Founders Edition, you can request access to the playtest on Steam and be among the first to test the public versions of the game. This is possible not just on PC, but across all platforms. Even PlayStation and Xbox users can participate in this playtest. SMITE 2, like its predecessor, will also support cross-play.

The full game is expected to release between mid to late 2025, and it will again be completely free. However, all the skins you purchased in SMITE will not carry over. But that doesn’t mean you’ll lose all your progress. The developers have announced that for every Gem you spent in SMITE, you’ll receive Legacy Gems in SMITE 2. You can use these to buy new skins and characters. If you buy the Founders Edition, the number of your Gems will even be doubled.
