No Man’s Sky is a massive space exploration game. This game was released in 2016 and was developed by Hello Games. Despite its age, the game is still being developed and improved, which has kept it with a high player count over the years.
In this open-world survival game, you can explore various procedurally generated planets. There are nearly infinite different planets to discover, but more on that later. On these planets, you can find resources to upgrade your equipment and ship, and customize other aspects of the game. You can also build your own base to store items and much more.
How big is No Man’s Sky?
If we look at the file size, the game itself is not very large, requiring just 15 GB of storage space. However, this does not reflect the size of the actual game world, which has potentially 18 quintillion planets. To illustrate this number, here it is: 18,446,744,073,709,551,616.
Exploring each planet would take several billion lifetimes if you took your time on each one. However, you don’t need to explore all the planets to complete the game. Nevertheless, some planets feature exotic biomes, such as one full of hexagons, among many other varieties.
Since the flora and fauna of the planets are procedurally generated, you’ll discover new species on each planet, keeping the game exciting even after many hours of play. Some planets are more dangerous than others, being too hot or irradiated.
Story of No Man’s Sky
The story of No Man’s Sky takes up only a small part of the game, as the focus is on exploration and survival. However, the game does have a story, with two main storylines comprising 10 missions and 18 smaller side missions. The two primary storylines are “The Atlas Path” and “Artemis Path.”
The Atlas Path consists of one major mission, which was part of the 2016 release. This mission must be completed to unlock the Artemis Path, which was added in a 2017 update. This mission integrates well into No Man’s Sky’s story. The following contains spoilers for the story, so click here to skip spoilers.
You can start the mission after discovering a space anomaly and asking Polo to guide you to an Atlas Station, or by jumping into a system with an Atlas Station. Inside, you’ll receive Atlas Seed blueprints, eventually obtaining 10 recipes.
After collecting all seed blueprints, you must create the Heart of the Sun. This opens the final Atlas interface, where you can either birth a new star or leave. Your choice allows you to see black holes on the map without Polo’s help.
Development of No Man’s Sky
No Man’s Sky was developed by Hello Games. This studio had previously released Joe Danger and was working on Joe Danger 2. However, founder Sean Murray didn’t want the studio to only make Joe Danger games, so he secretly worked on No Man’s Sky’s engine for a year. The idea came from his childhood dream of becoming an astronaut.
Once the engine was ready, he secretly recruited four team members to help develop the game, causing tension in the studio. The game was revealed to the public and the rest of the team at the 2013 VGX Awards. After Joe Danger 2, the entire team worked on No Man’s Sky.
On July 8, 2016, the 15-member team released the game after four years of development. They continued to work on updates, adding new features and fixing bugs. Initially released for PlayStation 4 and PC, it later came to Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and even the Nintendo Switch.
Is No Man’s Sky worth it?
If you enjoy open-world survival games or exploring new planets alone or with friends, No Man’s Sky is perfect for you. With 18 quintillion planets to explore, each with unique creatures and resources, it offers endless discovery. Even though the story of the game is only mediocre, it still encourages further exploration.
The developers have been adding new content for over 8 years, making the game better and providing more to explore. So, if you’re interested, set off into space and explore the infinite expanses of No Man’s Sky.
